Worse teacher possible. I did not sign up for a 24 hour+ work week for this class. online lectures an mandatory class meetings for points. If you want an A prepare to lose your social life

Great teacher. The entire design of the class is meant to help you learn. Iclicker questions, OWL homework, lectures, lab, and extra problems all help learn the material. The material is hard to learn and Dr. Trautman has a large vocabulary so office hours is a must. He's super helpful during office hours. I'd take him again!

Dr. Trautman is a nice teacher who is passionate on what he does but the moment he opens his mouth is the moment you get confused. His tests are ridiculous, even with a large curve and the reflections are a problem too since he grades VERY anally on each one, despite putting time and effort into them. Avoid if you can!

Passionate but not good at communicating. Does not get the message across - use the OWL.

Dr. Trautman is a very nice guy but does not know how to teach! I found this class to be harder than even my O-Chem class. The good news, he does have a large curve and the OWL, Clickers, and Reflections will save you. My advice, do the HW, book problems, and more importantly, the past exams he posts. DON'T review his lectures

Hard to follow sometimes but his passion overshadows his mediocre ability to teach and get to the point. Beats around the bush at times but does not fail to get the point across. I just wish he had more effective ways of teaching the material. Great professor overall!

Let me give all you prospectives students some advice from someone who did well in the course. 1) read the material before class so you know what's being covered. 2) You need to pay attention to what he is saying because the ppt slides are secondary. 3) do the book problems. 4) GO TALK TO HIM IF YOU ARE CONFUSED. He is EXCELLENT in his office.

His class is pretty hard. He talks a lot and its hard to know what notes to write and hard to understand the concepts. His exams are very difficult and class average is always ~50%. They are not like the practice midterms at all. He has a large curve but still very difficult to get an A. Online hw every week and clicker questions in class for grade

Comment:
General chemistry supposed to be easier than ochem. He makes the topic hard to understand and he always confused students and never directly answers questions. The final exam is easier than the midterms, make sure you do owl, clicker and reflections. Make sure you read the book and do the Silberberg homework problems. it is a hard class.

Comment:
Professor Trautman is very intelligent, too much so to convey ideas clearly. Like others said, his powerpoints are very unhelpful and the midterms are difficult. Make sure to get maximum points in other areas like homework and clicker. He did curve the class and the final was easier, but still he was poor at teaching.

Very knowledgeable chemist, but cannot teach. Lectures are all over the place and needs to be more clear with his diction and syntax of his explanation of chemical concepts. Ppt slides do not help....

I didn't think it was possible for him to be even more of a bore than he was in 115 but he was. Same deal as before, he takes simple ideas and makes them confusing. Unfortunately you don't have a lab component to help you out this time but you still have OWL to help you. Oh and if you're about to take chem 115, buy the Silberberg book.

Dr Trautman is too smart to teach. He has no idea how to convey concepts to students and makes everything much more complicated. I taught myself using the book. The two midterms are really hard but the final (worth 400 points out 1000) is much easier. He has a really good curve so you can pass the class if you study hard.

Trautman makes general chemistry 2 MUCH harder than it should be. He's not clear and his tests are ridiculous. He is nice and is very smart, but he can't convey any of the concepts. Take with someone else!

I managed an A- but used my previous HS chem knowledge and the OWL online hw to teach myself. Nice guy, but makes simple concepts more complicated than necessary. Don't bother taking notes, they're online. Just do OWL (online hw) and take notes from that. Do at least 15 clicker and do all your labs. Has trick clicker questions too.

GOOD CLASS! i NEVER opened the textbook. i went to every class and lab. worked hard on my labs (which really helped with understanding the material). The lectures were good to study off of, i made flashcards for tests..... most say they dont like the prof, but chem 115 is a hard class in general, if you put in the time, you'll do well...i did!

I really like Trautman because he enjoys what he teaches and has a wealth of knowledge of chemistry. Between the many laboratory materials and fees, the extremely overpriced book, and the clicker, this was the most expensive class I have ever taken. Trautman can help clarify difficult topics, but don't expect him to do all the work for you.

This course has a lot of exams, but if you follow the schedule, you'll do pretty well on exams. Many of my classmates complain that he doesn't teach well, but I think if you study and go to class, you can understand pretty well. I agree that he sometimes omits important details because he always doesn't control class time well.
