He's a cute quirky man who probably knows more about China than anyone. Listen to his lectures and do his readings and you can get a lot out of the class. A semi-tough grader. It's hard to break an A-. He's a little awkward but his credentials and kindness make up for it. Has great stories too.

Comment:
Prof. Sutter is knowledgable and nice. Course is structured, but far too basic. Heavy readings. Anyone with any Asia background whatsoever will find themselves very frustrated. Lecturing style could be improved upon-- he tries to "brief," like he did when he was at CRS, not "lecture," but ends up just rambling. Grades surprisingly tough, though.

Meh. Good stories but most of class is spent listening to other people's presentations so you don't get to really hear his expertise. If you're familiar with Asia at all you might find this class very basic. He's a really nice guy and clearly very knowledgable but if I had to do the semester over I would have picked another class.

Wow! This was a great class, one of the best I have taken in my three years at Georgetown. Prof. Sutter is incredibly knowledgeable about the topic and very interested in teaching. Lots of good stories. There is way too much reading, but you will be fine just looking over it. There is a lot of work, but you can do well if you put in the effort.

Really outstanding course and professor. About 6 expert speakers lectured during the course about different aspects of domestic issues in China. Sutter is THE expert in his field, and if you are interested in China, this is the professor to learn from. A LOT of reading and the papers are tough, but he is a very fair grader.

A wonderful professor, extremely knowledgeable. He taught us not only about China but about the intelligence world, and he has a very quirky sense of humor. Lots of guest speakers. As another person said, he expects a high level of writing - however he is open to various points of view and lets you write on whatever topic you want.

Sutter is a great teacher and lecturer. He usually has me hanging on every word for the whole of his hour-long lectures. Plus, in his seminar classes (once a week), he allows a lot of time for discussion. There is a lot of assigned reading, but his class is great and if you're interested in China, you absolutely MUST take him.

He's nice, funny/quirky, and the class quite interesting. He assigns a lot of writing but you have a lot of room to choose what you are interested in writing about. Not a very difficult grader. I highly recommend him for a survey of China.
