Comment:
Schechter was tough but willing to work with students. I took his Historian's Craft class so it was a difficult class altogether but if you work hard he's willing to work with you. His attendance policy is insane, if you miss more than two classes there goes a letter grade. Good teacher if you are willing to show up and put in the work though,

A lot of reading throughout the year, sometimes feels overwhelming for a coll course. Extremely tough grader, felt as though nothing I could have done would have satisfied him, some comments on essays were very unfair. Pretty likable and nice guy, very knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. Lectures are mostly him just talking. Unlikely A

Avoid this professor at all costs. There are multiple reasons he is a bad prof 1) He doesn't really lecture just rambles on, so you're bored without learning anything. 2) He is IMPOSSIBLE to please. No matter how much work I put in I could never do well on his essays because he expects you to know things that only experts would. I could go on...

He isn't that hard of a teacher, but he does put a lot of weight on class participation so you have to read the lengthy readings he gives you. He is an incredibly tough grader on papers and is super nit picky about everything. I do not think anyone in our class got above a B so don't take the class if you want higher than a B in a Coll class

Nice enough guy (maybe), but dont take the Historians Craft with him. Youll be bored out of your mind in class and stressed out of your mind doing the assignments. His comments on papers are helpful and thorough if also weirdly cutting.

Professor Schechter is really passionate about the topic and really knows a lot. His lectures can be a little dry and tangential, but they are relatively interesting and you learn great details about the french revolution. His feedback on papers is good which is helpful!

Very knowledgeable historian and really wants his students to do well in the class while actually engaging the class with the material. your grade is based on less than 5 things so you can't screw up one thing. he does provide for some extra credit through guests who come to speak though. those help your grade by a percentage or two

Learned nothing about global history but a lot about historiography. I think he was experimenting with the class for this semester because I saw he's changed the books for spring 2017 semester. Easy class, lectures totally optional, especially if you do the reading guides. Easy A depending on your TA. Discussion sections mandatory.

For Schecter's class I needed to read four textbooks and write four papers. Because I read and typed answers to all of the guide questions he posted, I did very well. If you put in the time throughout the semester to keep up with the books you will do well. You don't really need to attend most lectures.

Comment:
Schechter is a great guy and a knowledgeable professor who obviously cares deeply about the subject, but his new class style - having us spend the first 3/4 of the class discussing articles in small groups - is 100% not helpful, or particularly enjoyable. Honestly, would have preferred a lecture class. Easy grader though.

I'm not at ALL a history person, but I took this class for a GER and actually really enjoyed it. Prof Schechter is an amazing lecturer because he makes even the dullest topics super entertaining. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the exams are basically straight from his slides so if you go, you'll probably get an A. Highly recommend.

A brilliant man and an engaging professor. His class is not difficult and you learn a ton. Highly recommended--the man is hilarious and though lectures aren't mandatory, you end up wanting to go regardless. Take his class.

Best lecturer I've ever witnessed. Often had "R-rated" lectures and his connections to his own life and outside information kept a large lecture hall engaged. Discussion felt kind of like a waste of time but I guess that depends on the TA. Go to the last classes before the exam, he gives freebie MC answers from the actual exam!!!!
