Comment:
I took this class bc I am interested in the topic and I'm a philo major. I wish I didn't take the class. I don't expect to be handheld through the essays but it would be nice to have one class dedicated to the essays. Really brief on major topics. Would be a good class for people with a background in social contract. Tough class but interesting.

Comment:
In person, Jolley's a really great guy, and in OH he can explain all the ideas in more detail than in lecture. He has a very "overview" approach to philosophy, as if he was referencing a documentary, but he takes great interest if you do. Be prepared to tell him to ask more questions, and make the class interactive. If you do, the class will be fun

Social Contract. Fair grader but on the harsh side. Prompts for essays were given but no guidance on what was expected. Explains books thoroughly but sometimes uses interpretations of the reading without explaining where it came from. Clearly explains concepts and raises issues and then shows different solutions to it. Got a lot out of it.

A great lecturer, very clear and courteous. If you are interested in learning the subject and put the effort you should into it, (and talk to your TA after lecture in discussion) you should have no problem. Exams are based on lecture, no tricky stuff.

Took him for social contract. He really knows his stuff and knows how to teach, and really engages the students that did their reading. You will get as much out of his classes as you put into it. My suggestion is only take him if you're interested in the subject mater, otherwise pass - it will be overwhelming.

One of the worst classes i've ever taken. Boring and for a philosophy class, it didn't provoke much thinking on the student's part.

Sometimes in class I have to restrain myself from laughing out loud because Prof. Jolley walks backwards as he lectures..it's hilarious. As a prof. though, he's pretty damn good. The T.A on the other hand has a stick up his you know what with giving out grades.

Professor Jolley is extremely knowledgable and kind. He is one of THE best professors in lecture courses. I notice that the poor ratings are from Intro students. If you want to learn Philosophy, and all the important arguments and positions out there, take him. He is a leading authority in the field

Overall, he's a pretty cool guy. Problem: he is very conservative in his work and teaching. Thus, be prepared to regurgitate, or compromise your grade for creativity. His and gestures are cool. A closed fist raises up to the right side. The more important the point, the higher the fist goes.

Walks back and forth so much you can see dark marks in the carpet from his shoes (HIB 100). Extremely knowledgable in Philosophy though. It's not him who makes your grade, it is his hard grading TA's. Jolley is a pleasant and respectable man.

Who said he was easy to understand? Lovely accent, but hard to follow once you lose focus for a second. Typical just-take-what-they-say-in-lecture-and-spit-it-back-at-them in some essays and IDs. A good TA is really helpful.

Boring. What's up with his hands on the sides of his waist every time he lectures?! It looks like he's RIVERDANCING. Test is hard! Identifications are horrible!

I really can't stand this professor. He smells bad when you talk to him, he has a horrible english accent (I can't stand it personally), and he rambles and rambles with out much clarity. Didn't spark my interest in the subject.

He is one of the best professors I have had. He breaks complicated theories into organized steps for you to understand. He encourages students to challenge his views on philosophical texts. Plus, his english accent makes lecture interesting.
