Lectures are dull and boring. He is passionate about his classes and expects you have prior knowledge or do work out of class to understand at his level of knowledge. Isn't clear on questions asked and refers to the book to explain answers. He also tries to individualize your writing - very scientific in thought. I suggest intended majors only.

Lectures are BORING. Tests are easy if you fill out the outline he gives you before each test, but it's a ton of material! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF ANY PROGRAMMING. I REPEAT. DO NOT. I REPEAT AGAIN. DO NOT. 90% of the labs are using Perl Programming. Dr. Allen, himself, is a nice person, but his class isn't fun.

If you don't have any prior knowledge to Computer Science, I would not take this class. Dr. Allen's lectures are very hard to follow and not the most exciting, either. He is not an extremely hard grader and his tests aren't too overwhelming. Most of the stuff I learned was from the labs, not his teaching.

One of the worst teachers I have ever had ever. Not helpful at all. Very unfair. I had to teach myself. The tests are literally the worst tests I have ever had to take. They are not logically based.

Terrible terrible teacher. Lectures are boring and unclear, he is no help what so ever on homework and labs and the tests are near impossible regardless of how hard you study because of vague matching sections where the answer could be any number of them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Lectures are boring/unclear but get better as the term goes on. VERY knowledgeable professor. Ask a lot of questions, lectures can be confusing but he's very willing to help. Tests are HARD, really know the material inside and out. Overall, very tough for an intro class, but we learned some really cool stuff. Don't take if you just want the GER.

CS37 covers a lot of material, so its naturally a tough class. His tests are very hard and detailed. Labs and homework on the other hand, aren't as bad: they are quite helpful and will make up for the tests. Lectures can be dry, but he does explain everything well.

VERY hard tests. Labs are not that bad but there are a lot of them and he grades every little detail. Knows a lot about the subject but does not explain the material well. Powerpoints help but 90%of his questions come from the book.

If you're just looking for a grade and how something about computers, take his guy. His test come mostly from the lectures, but definitely throws some stuff in from the book to see if you read. He doesn't like it when you ask for help during lab sessions, but they're easy.

This dude is a beotch to listen to in class. The labs outside of class are rediculous and he is not helpful at all. He has all of his lectures on powerpoint, so that is really helpful for taking the massive amount of notes each day. Tests are insanely detailed and he makes a lot of grading errors, so watch out for that.

easy labs, HARD tests...he wrote the book and expects you to know EVERYTHING on the outline (5 pages @ min)...very knowledgeable but isnt that great of help. Not THAT bad of a class, but wont be a breeze to get an A...came out with a B+

straight forward, not much personality, but nice. very dry, factual class- labs are fun though. tests are very detailed and a bit hard but not that bad- an A should be pretty managable. I would take it again.
