Lukes really challenged me to think deeper about the course material for political philosophy. Close and critical readings are a must as well as thoroughly thought through papers. Hard grader, but you will learn

Comment:
Weekly essays that are short (3 pages) but are not easy to write. This is by no means an easy class, but very interesting. Lukes provides little class structure to facilitate class discussion and cater to what the students want to philosophize about. Easy to get by with a B, but nearly impossible to get an A.

Professor Lukes (The Philosopher King) is without a doubt the best teacher I have had at SCU. Brilliant, engaging, helpful, and always ready to open up a debate. If you keep your eyes up and really dive into the material you will get more out of his classes than any others at the university. If you have time, go to office hours. It is worth it.

You have to do the readings and participate in the class if you want an A. Be willing to ask him questions in class, because I found he was at his best when he answered questions. He is very good at explaining, but if no one speaks up he'll assume you understand. Awesome guy, wants you to succeed.

Professor Lukes is the best professor that SCU has to offer in any department. He is incredibly intelligent, thought provoking, and challenges students to do their best. If you are engaged in the material, you will do well. Don't be intimidated because that the class is hard, it will make you a better student and it's a privilege to learn from him

He is an amazing professor, one of the best! He is brilliant and smart yet very personable, funny, and approachable! He makes philosophy interesting esp. for majors. The class is easy going. He runs it very similar to a seminar where you discuss the reading assignment the night before. He is totally a philosopher king--Highly Recommend him!

To put it simply, this man is amazing. He inspired me to get involved with political philosophy after his two classes. The classes are both lecture and discussion, with heavy reference to the authors' works - but honestly, he teaches the material so well that good notes can get you through the class fine. All students should take Lukes, esp. majors

Very fair-minded and open to student's opinions. He's as much of a philosopher as a politician, which makes his approach to the process of government very refreshing.

Very good professor with an unorthodox teaching style. Great class. (If you want to learn about all of the particular processes of government--textbook stuff--don't take the class. If you are interested in why US gov works...take the class.
