He is very misleading with the overall class. I have always gotten A's on assignments like essays, but that changed when I joined his class. When I asked for help (multiple times), I was told that "Your writing style doesn't match mine, so I can't help you". Was forced to drop with a W so my overall GPA wouldn't be affected (and that says a lot).

He was not clear with any instruction given. Would give criticism and allow for revisions on 1st drafts, but then give even more criticism (for areas that were not mentioned before) for the final draft and would not allow to revise. Would not be clear on grades. And felt threaten by most students work. If you want an A, DO NOT take this class!!!

The hardest class i ever have in my college life, a lot of papers and reading, first day of quarter. 12 pages of reading already appears into our face.

Comment:

I enjoyed his EWRT2 course. Sure there was a lot of reading, but that can be expected in a college level class. Be respectful- don't show up really late, don't talk during lecture and put away your cell phone. As long as you apply yourself, his class isn't very difficult. Don't "BS" your essays, he's seen it all and can identify bad writing.

Comment:

I strongly recommend reading course syllabus and assignment sheets carefully to understand what he is expecting us to do. His handwriting is quite hard to read, but those comments really help us to improve our writing. Don't miss your due dates otherwise, he won't accept your paper. Tell him in advance if you cannot meet the deadline!

Took his EWRT2 class because of all of the amazing comments left about him in EWRT1A. One of the worst classes I've taken by far. SO much reading on random articles that he gives quizzes for. Read one novel that was the final research paper. Miss 3 classes, consecutively or not, he'll drop you-- even if you e-mail him that you're sick.

constant reading. its like he doesn't care that you have other classes. nit picks everything, if you don't show up you won't pass. Feedback on drafts is unreadable and he asks for too much on the research paper due at the end of the quarter. do not take this class

Great teacher, super relaxed and approachable. I would have him for EWRT2 but I can't fit him into my class schedule. Very nice and you can go to him for help. Mainly essay based classes we wrote about 6 essays. PSA HIS HANDWRITING SUCKS SO DON'T BOTHER READING HIS CRITIQUES ON ROUGH DRAFTS, GO TO HIM AND ASK. Other than that he's a super chill guy

Mr. Shively is a very intresting professor. I would definently recommend him. He's pretty open minded when it comes to trading essays and over all can be an easy grader as long as he sees your effort to make corrections he's mentioned. He made the class have a pretty laid back atmosphere and doesn't require much participation or attendance

Pretty dull dude. If you're already comfortable with your writing than his class is pretty easy. I wouldn't take it if you wish to improve your writing. His hand writing is unreadable but refuses to correct papers electronically. He WILL drop you if you miss more than three classes. Lectures are boring and unorganized. Pretty easy grader though.

if you can sit through a boring class for two hours and do all the work you'll be fine. the only assignments were essays and a few quizzes here and there and one novel to read. only challenge was the final paper where he expects a bit more. he is very helpful but don't miss too much class attendance matters to him

This class had a great syllabus. Tim was very knowledgable of the course material and helped me read in an entirely new way. His test questions are broad and shouldn't be a problem if you've done the reading.

Comment:

First, Mr. Shively is an "acquired taste" for many students. Second, He's very knowledgeable in his field of study and will go out of his way to help his students. Third, he has too many required textbooks for his class, which doesn't allow the students to focus on an author and retain their work. I'd recommend his class to anyone who isn't lazy.

I took him for 1A and 1B. I received "B" for both.Do all of the essay and you will be fine,there is a lot of reading but, no need to worry to much if you forgot to read a chapter or 2.

Student Beware: Boring!!! Haven't learned a thing! My writing is worse! Yesterday only 12 students in class. There are only 2 people who contribute and everyone else just stairs off into space. He's super chill about everything except attendance. It doesn't matter if you contribute and have all A's, 6 absences or tardy's and he WILL flunk you.

Comment:

Took 1A and 1B with Shively, and managed to get decent grades both quarter. He was very nice! Coming back after year to leave the review. His notes\feedback on essays were hard to read, but he stapled a slip of typed paper on the back with explanations that helped. Good teacher, was hoping to take EWRT2 with, this upcoming quarter.
