Prof Barez is one of the best at SJSU. You'll learn a lot in his class BUT, if you slack off, you're done for. 2 midterms, hw and final. Hw is 30% so make sure you do all of it! If you do better on your final than the average of both your midterms, then he'll replace that as your final grade, assuming it's a 65 or higher. Practice the ex. problems

One of the best professors I've ever had, and will always remember. - Hw 30% of grade, and is graded hard. Average C+ scores - Midterms class average 54%. no curve. Brutal grading, I studied like they were finals. - Attend his office hours for amazing help. - I spent average 8+ hours a week of study/hw.. normal is 1hr. I LEARNED SOMETHING. A+

Comment:

Barez has a fast pace for ME147 and covers a lot of material. Buy his textbook not only for homework problems, but also for the very helpful sample problems in there. Overall, Barez teaches a tough course but don't give up. I did poorly on the two midterms but did very well on the final, and Barez weighs the final more than the midterms. Take him!

Prof B. is not the kind of person who will pass you for showing up to office hours. Those midterms are harder than most engineering finals. I remember taking one that lasted 3 hours- started at 4:30 ended at 7:30. Be prepared to spend a bulk of your time on this class and make it your top priority. Not hard to pass, but very easy to fail.

Tough but fair in a nutshell. He's tough because he wants you to learn, not just pass. I had him for several different classes, and he always tries to take care of whoever asks for his help. Problem is sometimes there's a line outside his office so you can't get to him.

Good news: The definition of an approchable prof. Very considerate and caring towards every student. Bad news: he puts the emphasis on teaching procedures for solving problems, not on the concepts AT ALL. His tests are exactly like HW. There is no variety in the problems. You will walk away with a good grade but not really understand the subject.
