I took this class fall quarter, but I wanted to say that Tsuyoshi is a great dude! I enjoy history so that's my bias BUT this class was pretty easy and made a little better by his strange sense of humor. The essays were not difficult and the midterm/final were fair. My TA, Brian Griffith, was also an amazing dude, I'd recommend both of them!

So with Hasegawa, he is difficult to hear in lecture and sometimes the slides are a bit confusing, but overall its a pretty easy class. If history is not your thing, youll do just fine. A lot is covered in your section, there are only 3 big papers and the tests are fairly easy. He is an oddly humored man but very passionate about history.

Professor Hasegawa is an interesting character, he tends to be funny at times and chooses to engage with the students. The class is fairly easy if you keep up with the readings, note the textbook is required, but not needed. Only thing though about the class is his Japanese accent however it could be picked up.

Hasegawa is a great professor. His lectures are very fascinating. His class does require a lot of reading and writing- however it isn't graded too harshly. I would recommend TA's Stephanie and Jay.

Truly a terrific professor who cares greatly about his students. He even showed up to some of the discussion sections to make sure we understood the material. There are 3 papers in this class (all of which are extremely easy). The midterm and final are super easy as well.

Professor Hasegawa is awesome. He's funny, engaging, and knows the material very well. His accent takes getting used to but, once you get it, it's fine. Essays are vague and therefore somewhat difficult but it almost allows you to write whatever you want (within the prompt and reason). All lectures are posted online but I'd still go to class.

Great class over all. Make sure to keep up with all the readings, pay attention in lecture and the exams/essays will be simple. The exams don't focus on specific dates but rather overall themes.

He is a very nice and ntelligent man, but his lectures were difficult to understand and sometimes he went way too fast. There is a TON of reading and the exams included a lot of reasoning and less factual details. The prompt for the papers were very vague and the TA for my quarter was no help whatsoever

This class prepares you for writing grad papers. His proseminar was amazing. He is strict and blunt, but it extremely helpful. If you put in the work, he can tell. One of the best classes I have ever taken. Highly recommended, but only for those who can motivate themselves as well. Peer reviews help as well with your paper. Take this class! :)

SO MUCH READING, very high use of readings on tests, mandatory lectures, incomplete powerpoints. you have to take extra notes. He's a great guy, really. He's extremely well educated, but I don't feel like his lectures taught me much. I had Zamira as a TA and she was great, but also a hard ass. The grading is kinda hard. But pretty interesting class

Honestly, these classes are supposed to be hard and prepare you for grad school writing and research. If you are persistent and do your work, he will assist you with your paper. But if you slack, he'll call you out on it. Sounds like a scary class, but this was honestly the funnest, best class I've taken at UCSB. IMO, he's top tier a professor.

Professor Hasegawa is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. I've taken Hist 4A, 135C, 191C, and 191P with him. He's knowledgeable, helpful, engaging, and experienced. If you have the chance to take his proseminar, do it! He wants you to do well and gives detailed and constructive feedback through every step of your paper.

Took the class for my major, not really by choice, but ended up enjoying the class. Once you catch onto his accent, great professor and makes class interesting..doesn't just repeat the book. A lot of reading, so stay on top of it. Tests aren't bad if attend lecture and do most of the reading, and definitely attend sections and most lectures!

I honestly have no interest in history, but Hasegawa made the class enjoyable. Gives out tons of easy points. He makes lectures mandatory but you get points. He also posts the lectures online. He's funny and really helpful. Totally recommend!

Amazing teachers. Very interesting lectures. The readings were things like Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf, things all students should read. The essays were open, and students were encouraged to use critical thinking. I HIGHLY recommend this teacher if you like concepts and causes of events over memorization of events and details

This class is really boring and he is very hard to understand. Really hard essay grader. I'm normally an A student and got a B. Most of what I learned in this class was from studying for the midterm and final, not from lecture.

one of the best at ucsb. really cares about his students. the course material/issues raised are fascinating. lecture attendance is 5% of your grade, 1 short essay, midterm, and final consisting of terms and essays.

Comment:
The level of texts to read during one quarter is daunting. 5 books and a LOT of articles to read for Soviet History. Also, he has a thick accent, which might not be good for some people. He also used my e-mail correspondence as an excuse to stop teaching at the OCS. Very immature. The subject was interesting, but his lectures were BORING.
