Comment:
You will learn a lot and become a better mathematician by taking any Bergelson class. He wants his students to be competitive with others at the highest levels (i.e., schools like Princeton and MIT). Expect no lectures on material from the book, you will be expected to read that independently. Professor Bergelson likes to teach about his work.

Comment:
Professor Bergelson is somewhat of anomaly. I've taken two courses with him and they were the two best courses I've taken in college. You will need to work very hard to keep up, and will be required to know mathematics not directly involved with the course material. His class isn't for everyone, but you'll learn a great deal from him if you try.

Took a reading seminar with him, and he regularly insults students, interrupts them, and generally couldn't keep out of the way of the class. F.

Terrible. We took two midterms and a final, and never found out our grades on any of them. As far as I can tell, his assignment of grades was completely arbitrarily. He assigned tons of homework, checked it only for completion, never lectured about anything in our textbook, assigned "bonus" problems that weren't bonus and did not have office hrs.

Something of an anomaly. He's able to explain concepts very well, has a sense of humor and works to make students active. However, he commits the cardinal sin of teaching - refusing to teach. He teaches what he wants to teach and nothing leading to it.

Despite the huge workload he requires of his students, he explains concepts clearly and is the most interesting Math professor I have had at OSU.

Antichrist. I dropped the class after four all-nighters in the first two weeks. He wants nobody but genuine mathematical geniuses in his class, and uses public insult as a disincentive for all others.

Wonderful sense of humor. Prone to ridicule students who are not at the needed level. May ask student to bring vodka (without extra credit).
