I would be careful taking any kind of advice from Wendall. He could not survive outside St. Olaf as an artist. I'll refrain from taking cheap shots at his uninspired work, but it'd be great if he would get up to speed on art in 2015. If you are in his dept, I advise looking elsewhere for creative guidance ASAP.

Comment:

No art prof I've met gets his class as excited about art as Wendell! I love his energy, but a lot of his projects overlap class to class. Great motivator, but he does influence your work. His projects are reflective of his art process, so watch out that you still honor your own artistic process!

I couldn't imagine another prof for my first art course in college. He allows you to do what you want, while still challenging you to think in broader perspectives. In the class we learned a lot of art elements and rolled out a lot of creative series.

Wendell is one of the best professors I've had at Olaf. he's inspiring and finds unique ways to challenge students. Not only is he a wonderful mentor, but he knows how to challenge everyone's unique and different approaches to making art.

I think Wendell is awesome. Definitely one of the quirkiest, most interesting profs I've ever had. He will help you expand the limits of your creativity and he cares for his students like they're his own children. One of the funnest classes I have ever taken.

Wendell is amazing! Although sometimes he isn't clear on what to do for a project, if you just ask him he is more than willing to help! He is great to be around, and hilarous! "literally" haha. Impossible to not become a better artist after this class!

I considered Wendell a Mentor but that only lasted until I got bored of painting. He had influenced me heavily and I started to see that my work was resembeling his. I decided to pursue something else and he completely lost interest in me and my work. It was a blessing in diguise really. I havent painted since and I am much happier for it.

he teaches color design...yet he wears two shades of black on any given day. he's not that helpful and thinks too highly of himlself. i think if you enjoy art as a hobby, do not take his courses. he's a bit pretentious.

So he's sort of interesting, and sort of fun, but I still don't understand how to create color depth. He also starts everyone out with a C, and you need to do exceptional work to get an A or B. Fair, I suppose, but not that cool.

Quintessential, eccentric, and a riot to be around. His antics and knowledge make him a great department chair and teacher.
