Intelligent man with first hand experience. Knows what he is talking about. While I took Science, Technology & Medicine II, topics dated back to the time of Socretes for at least half, perhaps more, of the semester. Only covered recent topics in last week of class. Lots of discussion of circles. Tests are very specific; he mentions dates.

He is very well-educated but deviates from the topic quite frequently. He seemed to only reference pre-modern topics when we were supposed to be talking about modern and even postmodern topics. There was no textbook and his tests were incredibly difficult and tricky. If you can, avoid him.

He is extraordinarily well educated. One gets the impression that he has memorized an elaborately written speech when giving a lecture. Very patient and makes history interesting. Occassionally makes jokes.

Even though he is very educated, he is not very clear on any topic he lectures about. I payed attention and came to every single class and had no clue what he was saying sometimes, and i've never gotten below a 90 in history before this guy

His tests are very, very difficult and he definitely tries to confuse and trick you on the tests. He is random with his teaching and doesn't stick on one topic, fully explain it and then move on to something else. The class needs more structure, all readings are from the internet, a textbook would be helpful.

His tests are very difficult. He makes no exceptions if you are out for illness. He is well educated. But seems to think his education insulates him for being responsible for caring.

Schafer is a very good history professor, and the material he teaches on the undergrad level is fairly straightforward. Theres only one textbook (like 30 bucks) and two multiple choice (a rarity in the history department) test. He also gives you an optional extra paper. He runs a good class.
