Pop quizzes every other lecture, AND they have equal weight to exams. Doesn't even follow his own in-syllabus grading scale. Class itself is extremely outdated (very 1970's). Not very lenient at all. Note that he is the only prof for this class, so he is unavoidable. No wonder the average grade is a fail.

Algo engineer that has worked for multiple OEM's. Would skip unless you have no other options. Guy was fine, but for an embedded sw class it was all reading off of 8 year old ppt slides verbatim - yikes! Doesn't actually show how to code any rtos topics - exams are just memorizing ppt info. Recommend Samir's ECE505 or embedded robot class instead.

Pop quizzes. His class revolves around pop quizzes and hope to God you studied what's on the quiz because if not you are screwed. You will do bad. Unless you've retaken the class. POP QUIZZES have EQUAL WEIGHT to EXAMS! No wonder the averages are 50%. He is the only prof for this class. You need a tutor or online resource to pass. God help you.

After retaking this class I thought it'd be an easy ride worked my butt off even though I didn't do any of the homeworks. Did the final project in 20 mins was way above the class average but gets a B-. This guy isn't avoidable so take him but don't listen to his syballus at all cause he clearly doesn't follow his grading distribution. Had a 70% B-

This is a weeder class for the ECE department, expect averages to be low. average for my class was 57%, so my 80% got curved to an A. Quizzes are brutally hard and he doesn't give enough time for them. You have to study all of the content well and be sure to do the homework even though its ungraded. He is always available in office hours

Shaout's lecturing and clarity was good, but exams were difficult and tricky. Not straightforward. Overall a tough grader in exams and projects, so be prepared to put in effort and potentially suffer grade-wise.

Does a fine job teaching the subject matter however is very vague with project/exam requirements. For example he could assign a project "Write a paper on embedded systems" and only once you've asked him in class what format, what length, what due date etc does he finally elaborate. Our final is today and he still hasn't posted the location yet...

Professor Shaout is the MAN!!! He is a very good teacher that knows the subject in and out. He will go out of his way to help his students , if his students take the time to ask for it. Tests and quizzes are very difficult. You Have to study everyday because everyday the material just builds on. He is a FILTER FOR THE ECE department. so watch out!

Dr. Shaout is the gatekeeper for UMD's ECE department. If you do not apply yourself to this course you will fall apart. The quizzes, labs, and exams are very difficult and they test multiple aspects of the course. You will learn a lot but it will not easy. Do not skip lecture or lab, ever; and go see him during his office hours if you need help.

Professor Adnan Shaout did a great job teaching this course. Hes very tough but by the end of the class you will actually learn A LOT. Weekly quizzes help you stay updated with the course, the key to getting an A is practicing problems in the notes, doing good on quizzes.

This teacher is bluntly a standout professor that you would have at one of the top universities, some of the students want to walk in and walkout without doing much. He doesn't let that happen, you come in study learn, get a good grade. Plain and simple. EARN IT.

As I saw some people mention before, his powerpoint slides are just full of text, like he copied and pasted them, and often 1 chapter of slides will be 100+ slides. When lecturing he just sits and reads the slides word-for-word (for the entire 3 hour class). When people ask questions, his answers sound like BS. His exams are a crapshoot.

Best ECE professor at UMD! Very easy class but he makes it very hard. Makes you work for your grade. You really have to keep up with material and study every week because you will have a quiz every week. STUDY for the exams, they are easy but he will throw a lot of tricks in there, make sure to REREAD questions! Overall learned alot! ALSO CURVES!!

You have to study for the weekly quizzes. He forces you to keep up in the class which is good. The quizzes and tests tend to have too many questions for the time given, and you won't finish if you aren't fast with the material. The notes are pretty clear.

Comment:
I had Dr. Shaout for ECE574, ECE554, and ECE528. Each slide is a wall of text. For lecture, he reads from the slides verbatim. When asked a question, his explanation is very wishy-washy, as if he is making it up on the spot. His test questions make no sense, have typos, and are hard to answer EVEN IF YOU KNOW THE MATERIAL. He is also very pompous.
