Comment:
Class is challenging if you don't have near-perfect grammatical skill. So unless you're minoring in English or have a lot of time to proofread your papers, it might be worth looking elsewhere. There are also only three assignments that make up about 80% of your grade.

Hes the best professor Ive had so far at Iowa state. I had never written a college level paper before and had always dreaded writing in high school. Hes a great teacher and give very specific feedback. Learned so much in his class.

One of the best professors I've had at Iowa State. I'm an engineer and always hated english but he made the class interesting a fun. He's very easy to talk to and he is very willing to work with you. I have nothing negative to say about Brain as a professor.

When you ask him questions, he's very good about explaining what he wants from students. He will also tear you apart for having bad grammar at the 300 level.

Brian is a great guy and seemed to really care about his students. He enjoyed having discussions and learning about his student's lives. Only con is that he takes a while to return graded work; however, he does offer a ton of feedback with your grade.

Although he does take a while to grade papers, he does so he can give feedback. He is super understanding for due dates. If he sees a lot of students are struggling with a paper, he pushes due dates back to give us more time. One of my favorite professors. Also really cares about you as a student.

He is one of the coolest people you will ever meet in your college career. He is easy to talk to, understanding, and is negotiable on assignments. His teaching style is very casual but he is able to get his point across just enough to where you know what he's saying. Ask questions. He will answer willingly. Like group projects? You will like him.

Comment:
Expect grueling assignments and low grades. The worst part is the emphasis on group work. Group components are weighted far more than individual components. He also grades how much you speak. Showing up and paying attention isn't enough.

The class is a lot of work, but if you put in the time it's easy to get a good grade. However, he returned all of our work at the end of the semester so no one had any idea how they were doing until the very end.

If you don't like professors that deviate from the norm, you won't like Brian. While I didn't get much from the lectures and his grading was TOO subjective IMO, the material which he teaches above and beyond the regular course material made taking his class worthwhile. I really benefited from his real world stuff about resumes & tech. documents.

One of the better if not best English teachers that I have had to this point. He actually took the time to explain everything. I think what most people didn't like about this was the way he went about it. Instead of spoon feeding it to everyone, it was done though discussion which instilled genuine inspiration.

Comment:
The most conceited instructor I have ever had. He is impossible to please, and is very opinionated with papers which are supposed to be subjective in nature. He has no consideration for other people's opinions; no one will ever answer a question of his adequately. Very bad with communication. If given a choice, opt for a different instructor.

Not a good professor at all. Cancels class all the time! Gives you good feedback on work, but takes FOREVER to grade it. Assignments are very repetitive. I highly recommend you find another section because Brian's classes are pointless and his lack of care will frustrate you beyond belief.

Comment:
Brian provides some useful information and is helpful when you ask. However, he may be the most arrogant professor I've had. He cancels classes randomly (sometimes with hours notice) and is very late with grades, if he ever grades anything at all. Papers were not hard, but very frequent and redundant. One of the flakiest profs I've had.

Though obviously a smart guy, he isn't a great teacher. Lectures are slow, and he takes forever to give back assignments (though he likes to complain about grading them). Lots of busy work and group work that is more obnoxious than difficult. He likes to cancel class randomly.

While the class itself was extremely easy, I did not like Brian at all. He made very sexual comments towards me (and the rest of the class) more often than I'd like to admit. The actual course work was extremely simplistic, mostly because he never actually graded anything. He also loves to randomly cancel class. All in all, easy class.

As a graduate, I truly appreciate the valuable lessons Mr. DeWall provided during ENGL 314. He has a practical approach to instruction that will enhance your business communication skills. The only downside to this instructor is that he is a poor/careless reference (he forgot to update his standard letter of recommendation to my name).

Comment:
This class was a waste of time, and DeWall doesn't know how to communicate. It's nothing but busy work--I did not improve upon my English skills at all whatsoever. I might have if he hadn't canceled class all the time, been present in his office hours, or actually returned work back prior to finals. He is filled with nothing but excuses.

He will never grade or return any or your work, ever.Really, I never got anything back. He sets a mandatory attendance policy but then frequently cancels class himself. He assigned a huge difficult group project that is a lot of work. Take a different section.

Seemed like a stereotype from the beginning. One of those professors who took the Dead Poets Society to heart. His arrogance is one of the first things you notice. Practically, he never hands back graded work and doesn't follow his own attendance policy. Prepare for a lot of canceled classes and pointless assignments.
