I took astronomy as my natural world because I couldnt get into anything else, which was a mistake. Hes truly a nice man, a bit awkward, but he means well. I am NOT a science person, and as a natural world, he spoke like we were science majors. A lot went over my head. Its not his fault Im bad at science, but it was exceptionally hard.

I took this class for my natural world requirement at Butler and if I had the option to go back and pick another class, I would have chosen this one again. The material is so interesting that I almost didn't mind studying. I learned so much in this class and Prof. Murphy was nice enough to drop a lab & 3 quizzes. You get out what you put in.

A pretty hot and cold guy. He can lash out from time to time, but sometimes can actually be funny. The actual course is very interesting, but a lot of text reading.

I had Murphy for my natural world & although this isn't the easiest class, it was definitely worth it. I've learned more in this class than I've learned in almost all my others and he makes the lectures really interesting and funny. His tests are hard and do require studying, but if you're willing to put in the work, I highly recommend this class.

Dr. Murphy is very passionate about what he teaches. He is very funny, but can seem somewhat rude during class (I promise he isn't mean). Go to his office hours if you're ever confused, he is so so helpful and really wants you to understand and pass. This class is extremely hard but very interesting. Be prepared to study like crazy.

He's full of opposites. Funny, light-hearted... then as soon as the class doesn't know an answer to a (typically unclear) question, he will try to make you feel pretty darn stupid. He crosses the line from time to time with this. But he's quick to smile and will explain something if you ask for help. Focus on labs/weekly quizzes.

He's a nice guy and understands that you're not an astronomy major. You learn some pretty interesting stuff. Class lecture is important because he stresses important things. A lot of labs but they are fairly simple outside of class assignments. I recommend it.

This is not a blow off class. Attendance is not mandatory, but you'll fail if you don't go. Especially to labs. But he's a funny guy. He's also a fair grader and willing to work with you if you need extra help. He will however insult you if you're an idiot. This was definitely my favorite class of the semester, though.

I came into this class loving astronomy, and now having gone through this class I know I never want to take another. For a subject that could be so interesting, he really does not make it seem that way. If no one knows an answer, he mocks the class and accuses us of not paying attention. He's a nice guy outside, the class just isn't interesting.

Excellent professor, I learned a great deal from him in E&M theory. He cares very much about the students success, and is interested in helping a student any way he can. The material and course is very difficult, but he makes it worthwhile

Can be a good professor, but he frequently gets off topic. He says really random things that are a good laugh. Course is challenging when he stays on topic. Its imperative you attend ALL classes and labs!

Very hard class. I didn't learn too much only because it was so hard for my non-science mind to comprehend what he was saying. Nice guy overall, very generous with final grades.

The class is moderately difficult, but I loved it. I would suggest anyone who needs to take a science class to take this. Professor Murphy has a geeky sense of humor and keeps class interesting. Just make sure to study all your notes for the class. I went in thinking I would hate the class, but in the end it was my favorite first semester class.
