Carl is one of the most incredibly intelligent and well read professors I have come across. His class is peppered with his own existentialist, lefist, anarchist discourses. His lectures are extremely interesting and he has the vast knowledge to ossillate between 300 BCE and the 2003 Iraq war. I was honestly sad to leave class. He was funny and kind

A really great prof! He was super funny and kept his lectures interesting. Very quick to email back and thoroughly answers any questions you have. But this course was only graded by 2 things (a paper and the final) so it was quite nerve-racking and difficult. Though he gives good criteria and is a lenient marker.

Professor Johnson gives insightful lectures, he went above and beyond for me in CLST 313. The final paper was worth 60% of the final graded and he offered to review my paper before hand to offer me meaningful feedback. This professor went above and beyond for his students. He has a kind heart. Much more caring than other professors I have had.

Helpful and extremely friendly and down to earth. Obviously brilliant and an individual thinker. Far too many rants and raves about personal issues and thus lost time on the course and didn't finish the course material. While I enjoyed the diversion sometimes I also found it frustrating.

The best professor at UBC. He goes beyond Classics and talks about German opera, film, modern philosophical literature and even his own First Nations cultural systems. Worth every penny, worth every second.

I love his rants and his anti-establishment attitude. He teaches us the about the real world and you don't find that very often with history profs (or at least the ones I've had). Excellent instructor. I totally recommend taking one of his courses!

I love Prof. Johnson. He's very anti-establishment and sometimes goes off tangent but his take on Greek epics was very interesting and engaging. Very easy exam if you did at least some reading. Got 85% overall. I'm going to take more of his classes! :)

Awesome prof -- take any course you can with him. Excellent lecturer, very helpful, sympathetic to undergrads -- overall excellent. Made classical studies very accessible to non-classical studies students (i.e. me) and is a very fair marker. To do well in his class just read the books, and go to lecture. I look forward to your book, Carl.

I agree Carl goes on rants, and they can get tiring, but really, Carl has tremendous knowledge in his field. Ask him a question, and he'll answer your question providing you with names and dates to back it up. He is simply brilliant, unique, and certainly worth experiancing. Highly recommended.

Carl is brilliant. Intelligent but humble, and very unique. Criticizes the institution and is honest and open about his opinions. Refreshing. Engaging speaker, though he sometimes goes on weird tangents. Go to class. He is helpful. Take his class.

The best post-secondary class I have ever taken. Carl's approach to the genre is deconstructionist, which I think destabilizes certain student's personalities. It can be disorienting to have all your assumptions challenged - but this is a university, not a factory. He's helping me on my path to wisdom, andt to academic excellence.

If you are tired of old profs who know nothing about their students and just regurgitate what the textbook says, Carl is your man! Funny, engaging, and full of awesome references, I love his class. Seriously, how many profs do you know are gamers? (As a gamer, I salute you Carl.) This class has given me a fresh new outlook on the world of Scholars.

He's a strange one, but a good teacher. He provides a good background of the subject...but he goes off into way too many tangents and we usually spent a quarter of the class speaking about something totally unrelated...which was fun cause it eased tension.

I so have to disagree with folks sayin' he's a boring lecturer... Don't y'all like the way he presents the material? I have never had any professor so approachable and not so full of himself that he thinks of himself as better than the student. Totally not the case. You can talk to him about anything, if you wish, and he's the best proefessor ever!

What can I say: Im hooked. His classes offer iconoclastic, sometimes radical, and very refreshing views of the classics, and acedemia in general. He's got an axe to grind with the human condition. Very sexy.
