If you want a lazy, easy A, take someone else. If you actually want to learn about graphic design, take prof. Kim. I learned the most from his class and his class kept me disciplined and motivated to always improve my designs. His feedback makes so much sense - I've had so many design epiphanies in this class. Show good work ethics & you can get A.

Comment:

He is the best graphic design teacher in SJSU. He gives very VERY VERY value feddbacks to your work. He gives you support and confidence. I took him in the morning during the summer. I would usually ditch morning class ALOT. But, this professor gave me the motivation to attend class. If you want to improve your work, TAKE HIM. YOU NEED HIM.

Professor Chang is a top notch Typography teacher. He really knows what he is talking about. A lot of his work has been featured in Switzerland and South Korea. Just as the previous commenter said you really need to improve in the course to get a good grade, but he is willing to help you as much as he can without actually doing the projects himself

I feel like with Prof. Chang, in order for you to get a good grades, you need to show improvement. That's why it is very important to attend his class during critiques because he will give you feedback. I was not a very diligent student (I miss some classes) but he still gave me a B. So, if you put in effort I think A is very getable in this class.

Chang is an incredible teacher -- probably the best I've had so far. He has a lot of knowledge and background in the world of typography, and is still making work and having shows internationally. If you care about typography/design and plan on working hard, you'll enjoy the class and grow a ton as a designer. Highly recommend his Summer 99 class.

He is somewhat hard to understand and he takes a long time to explain things. However, he will always give you good suggestions and he knows what he's doing when it comes to typography and design. It's very fast pace, and you should go to class each time so that you can keep up. It stays interesting and challenging, so stay positive and dedicated.

A friendly professor who cares for his students. Critiques and lectures can be long. He gives meaningful feedback that really helps improve your images/projects and projects are interesting. Overall, the course was easy, but it required a good amount of time, effort, and dedication.

He was absent a lot and went off on tangents ALL the time and they would be so unrelated and off track and LONG you felt like he was wasting your time. Hard to understand. He seems way too busy in his own life to really focus on your work.

Prof. Kim doesn't always tell you what he doesn't like, and sometimes ends up liking the design you originally had after you change it to fit everything he had suggested (although, what design teacher doesn't?) I didn't necessarily learn alot from him, but he did help me improve my designs and was also very encouraging. He goes off on tangents alot

i am not here to talk down on people, but i have to admit, prof chang is hard to please. virtually everyone in his class got a B except for about 2 people who got A's. he will never be satisfied with your work and always tells you that you need to improve something. get ready for some boring, long group critiques and misleading confusing advice

He DID show favoritism in my class by the way he spent time critiquing specific people (I was luckily one of them). When I took DSGD 105, with a different prof., he wasn't always at his office during his posted hours, but that was because he was working with the graduating GD seniors and was a work-a-holic. He's a very open-minded with new ideas, as long as you explain with good, clear reasoning, and elaborates on his critiques as much as you'd like including real-life examples (ex. FedEx {hidden arrow}).

The most helpful, not to mention, understanding professor in the design faculty. Anyone who doesn't put 100% into his class after he gives 100% (sometimes more) to his students should be ashamed of themselves. The only criticism I have would be he tends to spread himself thin at times, taking too much on at once, passing over students as a result.

This guy lives up to the hype. Very nice. Makes your design look great just by folding it or drawing on it a little. Compared to other 99s, his projects are the most challenging, but it's worth it. has great life stories and messages. a great teacher not just for design, but for life. he's pretty funny on occasion. must take him at least once!

His classes fill up fast for a reason! Kim demands a lot of you, and is always asking you to step it up one more notch. He is extremely fair, unbiased, and is very clear about what he expects. He does take up a lot of time, but it is always full of important stuff, even his tangents are interesting. :)
