Professor James is an AMAZING teacher. He makes the class as easy and fun as he possibly can. Calculus is not easy so do not expect an A if you do not put extra effort or understand calculus well. He is very sweet. Take him!

Suuuuper nice old man, but I didn't like his teaching style. In Calc 1 I was still building myself a foundation in Calc so I found it to be especially hard, but I just didn't understand the way he taught in class--I ended up teaching myself out of the book and on youtube.

I can say that Prof. James is probably THE BEST calc 2 teacher there is. I originally took calc 2 with Prof. Hristova and got a D. Technically I could've taken calc 3 with that grade, but i figured I would be lost so I opted to retake the class. I took it the second time around with Prof. James and got an A! He is an awesome calc teacher! Take him!

Great Professor! Crystal clear explanations and pretty much paves the road for you to succeed. Material is not the easiest but he makes it bearable. Best math teacher at UMD.

Excellent professor! The exams for this course, however, are typically less than 10 questions so there's little room for error. He's a generous grader, though.

He's very helpful during class-I got everything he was saying. when you're at home, it's a whole different story sometimes. It really comes down to you putting in the time and effort to >truly< learn it. He let's you re-try parts of one (or two) test(s) where you can get up to 2/3 of the points back. He grades more for your process than the answer.

Quizzes and exams were very fair. Notes and homework were essential to do well on the aforementioned. Also, Prof James did a very good job of explaining calculus concepts!

Took Math462 as undergrad with Dr Massey. Great class. Forced to take class again as grad student. Class sucked. Entire graduate program is geared towards WORKING PEOPLE! James didn't care. Only grad student to get full credit for homework was unemployed. Questions very repetitive. Treated class like Pre-Alg, 10-15 probs per day. Made class awful!

I had him for calc 1. He's seriously so friendly and such an amazing professor. He really knows what he's talking about and his exams and quizzes are really fair. If you pay attention in class and copy down his notes then you'll do just fine in the class. But all in all, he's awesome. I'm hoping to get him for other math classes. :)

had him for calc3, and he made it perfect. he's a little scatter-brained at times and seemed goofy the first week or so, but he is absolutely a brilliant professor. focuses on general ideas rather than just number crunching, quizzes were a single problem, exams were about 6, wish i would of had him for my other calc classes.

Prof James knows what he's talking about and really tries to get his students to understand the material. the course is challenging, but its calculus afterall, and if you do all your work you'll be fine! tests are tricky but he'll answer theory problems (given beforehand) and he asks for any homework problems before every class

It took my a while to get used to his way of teaching (with a very low voice). He's a great professor. Explains well and gives examples. He is VERY helpful if you came to his office. And he gives a ton of extra credit options that guarantee a boost to your grade.

Yes, not an easy a, but he's very, very approachable with any questions. As long as you do the homework, you'll be fine. Puts a proof on each test but lets you know ahead 3 possible proofs it could be & he'll even look over your proof to make sure you did it right! James is a nice man contrary to the post below me!

Professor James is excellent at teaching upper level mathematics courses. He motivates the proofs in a way that helps you understand and he will look over all of the assigned homework which isn't part of the grade. This is extremely helpful for two reasons: 1. it makes you do the homework, 2. it identifies problems. Attend lectures and understand.

I don't know how anyone can complain about professor James!Don't listen to them, of course this is calculus so it's going to be kinda hard, but professor James is the best!He is very kind & helpful. He knows his stuff & he knows how to teach..also genuinely cares for his students& wants them to do well. He will explain in diff ways until you get it

I also took him because of the good reviews. He is helpful and willing the help students as much as possible, but does not tell you whats on the test and grades very harshly. If you are a math major by all means enjoy, but if this is just another course on the road to your degree pass on him.
