Honestly one of the hardest classes I have taken. He not only speaks to the class as if you're an idiot, but he clearly does not know how to teach. He knows what he's talking about but not in a way that humans can understand. No extra credit opportunities. 3 exams (hand-written) and 1 paper. show up to class, what he says is on test.

So maybe 4-5 years ago he was somewhat tolerable, but in 2017 he's a disaster. There were times I left lecture and I didn't know what subject I was just thrown into for an hour and a half. No due dates or test dates are given because there's no syllabus. 3 grades, 1 of which he knows everyone fails. Don't do it, save your GPA.

WARNING: DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS. You will have 2 essay exams without open notes or books. You will have another essay project due by the end of the semester. The lectures are confusing and there is nothing to reinforce your understanding in class. Just make a lot of friends and regurgitate the notes you have to take.

Doesn't take attendance but you will need to show up to pass, no ppts. Hard to understand and very condescending. Asks for your input and if you don't say what he wants to hear, he says "WRONG! Did you not read? How hard is it to just read? I'm not asking you to understand it!" Don't take this if you have other options.

Really hard grader. You must take detailed notes and memorize what he says in class. Tests are in short answer form. He is a very hard grader, do not take him unless you have to!

DO NOT TAKE HIM. Honestly, this was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. He makes this class ridiculously difficult, especially for an intro course that most students take just bc its a requirement. I saw the reviews and thought people were just exaggerating, but no. I managed an A- but I worked my butt off for it, not worth it at all

His TA is a terrible grader, and he wants to hear his opinion spit back to him, not a true philosophical dialogue. It's a fun and engaging class if you like philosophy, but don't take him if you're just trying to fill a credit. Not worth the stress

I love philosophy and I love this professor, although I would much prefer to talk to him and attend his lecture sans grading. It was my last semester and I needed to fill this credit, after five years of busting my ass I just wanted to relax but I could not with this class. Pay attention to the lectures, read, take notes, and use office hours.

Don't take a class with Brown ever, unless you love to memorize. I'm a Phil major and have A's on all my other upper level Phil courses. I dropped this because there are too few grades, and he makes the material incredibly confusing. The class started out almost full, now there are 6 ppl left. My mistake was not taking RMP comments seriously.

95% of our class failed the midterm before he had to curve the grade so that a few more students could pass. Do not take this class for Kant because he will not address Kant. He will harp on metaphysics and epistemology throughout the semester. In his opinion, every word has at least 1000 implications depending on the way its used in an essay.

If you can't do abstractness, don't take him. He is there if you need him - go to his office hours when you can. There is a 4-6 page paper he assigns based on an argument presented in one of the books we discuss in class He sometimes gets confused with what he's teaching - it's Philosophy His lectures are the best lullabies - make you sleepy!

Long and boring lectures. Only 4 grades and all based on his lectures. Was a subject I was actually interested in but he turns it into a class discussing philosophy and religion instead of an intro to philosophy. Don't take for a humanities credit.

People complain about this guy. I don't get it. They say he only teaches you his interpretations of other people's work, which is true to some extent. It's an intro class... that's what teachers teach in intro classes. The problem, I think, is that for most of the students, this is the first time they've seen any Philosophy. It's not that bad!

It's simple...... If you wanna be stretched and challenged. Take his class, I thought that was the point of college..... But the other people must not think so. I am a freshman and got an A+ it was hard work but it's still do-able I recommend it because it makes my other classes look like preschool. It's worth the work. Trust me.

Do not take this professor. Not only will it ruin your GPA it will make your life miserable. Do not come in thinking, oh I am smart I will just work extra hard at this class like I did. His test on philosophy do not ask philosophical questions, they demand a direct regurgitation of what the professor says in class. Avoid at all cost.

I am telling you right now if you take this course after reading all these reviews thinking "oh I am a good student it probably isn't that hard" then you were just like I was. It is absolutely the most difficult class I have taken throughout my college career and I graduate this Spring. Do NOT take his course! It will hurt your GPA

Comment:
He is very rude and condescending, and often goes off on rants at his class. I thought the tests were unnecessarily detailed, as if he expected us to remember every single word he said. He also doesn't seem to realize that students mostly take his class for the humanities credit rather than an interest in philosophy.
