Comment:
Unpopular heavy analysis of Greek texts. Repeatedly makes inappropriate comments. Course is pointless, Honors program is a joke because of him and this class. Not worth whatever they claim you'll get out of it.

DL is an interesting professor. As a lecturer, he can be entertaining as he is a good story teller, appropriate for a literature class. The books are boring but you can go without reading them if you use SparkNotes, etc. Attendance is pretty much mandatory and gives extra credit at the end. Long papers and 2 tough tests, but fairly easily passed.

Dr. Lanier is an interesting teacher. You have to read if you'd like to pass, and don't assume you can get by without the books. You'll flounder. His classes require a lot of outside work, so if you have extracurricular activities on your mind, prepare to drop them. The Mid-Term and Final are horrendous, so try to enjoy the lectures while you can.

This class made me leave Honors. Dr. Lanier tried to by funny, but his jokes were often inappropriate. This class is utter nonsense. You will study for hours and still feel unprepared. If you don't like reading and analyzing ancient Greek literature, you're going to have a bad time. Only reason I got an A- is the insane amount of extra credit.

I had DL for Honors Core 1, and it was the worst class I have ever taken. His lectures are extremely boring, and I have never dreaded a class more than this one. It is obvious he cares about the Honors Program & is knowledgeable in Greek Myth, but all this class did was make me want to leave the Honors Program.

DL is pretty well liked by most Honors students, so depending on who you talk to many will praise him as the best teacher to ever walk the earth. But he does have some issues, such as the fact that he uses minor curse words a lot in an attempt to make the stories more interesting and appeal to his students. The class is tough, even if you read.

DL is easily one of the best professors at UWF. His lectures are interesting; the course content is good; he actually cares about you;fair amount of extra credit;Core 1 mentors are awesome and will save you. The negatives: his TAs are tough graders, there's a lot of reading (class can be passed without reading, but it's probably just as much work.

Dr. Lanier tells stories rather than giving lectures, so I just ended up listening rather than taking notes. I read half of the first book before deciding to use Grade Saver, Spark Notes, etc. It isn't about the books. It is about what you gain from the analysis of their content. He posts all the quiz questions so just study those and you'll pass.

DL is a great professor. His lectures are very informative, insightful, and entertaining. There is a lot of reading and writing in this class so be forewarned. No multiple choice. While all of the writing on the exams was a pain, I survived and I feel like I walked away with a lot. Honors students should be able to appreciate this course.

He's a pretty good teacher for the subject. He makes it interesting, but his tests and papers are not graded easily, and they're long. The only thing I have against him is he leaves most of his shirt unbuttoned during class, and it's very distracting but other than that, he's a great teacher.

Ah, DL. Does a great job explaining the materials in class. I read the SparkNotes/Gradesaver for most of the books and read the last few, and paid attention during the lectures and made 80-100s on all the quizzes. As long as you understand the material you'll do great. Read over the questions on the website, he uses those for everything.

Fantastic thinking class. I see why it's required for honors students. Very difficult, and sometimes "boring" lectures, but this truly is a class that you get out what you put in. A lot of time is required to read all of the sections he wants you to read, but STUDY his questions he has on the Honors area on the UWF website!

Did not stay enrolled in this class for very long at all. Lanier seems like a genuinely nice guy. He tries to make the lectures fun, but they end up getting really confusing and boring. Be prepared to set aside time to read and comprehend the stories. READING IS ABSOLUTELY necessary! I opted out of it, but some others seem to really like him.

Okay, so this class isn't going to be easy. However, he posts all of the questions you will see online. Take those, answer them, and KNOW them before class each day...you'll make a 90 or 100 on the quizzes if you do! All I can say is read and be prepared and you'll surely make an A!

DL..what to say, what to say. Gotta love the man. Very knowledgeable. Class is hard, but makes you think. Would take it again just for fun if that was an option. You do need to read--don't think you can just wing it. Difficult subjects--but Great Books is more of a life class than a Greek lit course. LOVE.

Read the books (or at least the sparknotes or SOMETHING), as you will need it. He posts every question he asks on UWF's site before-hand. Answer them all as you read, then memorize those answers. If you do these things and write your papers decently well, you will get an A. I'm not saying it will be easy, it probably won't. Great teacher, though.

Where to start with DL... This is a mandatory class for the honors students, so suck it up. You really do need to get the books, but you can get by with the cliffnotes-except for the Histories. Honestly, go to class, take notes, and listen. Maybe even read, and you can get a B. Aiming for an A... and you're in for a long semester.

He is a great teacher-really engaging and encourages student participation. If you need help with anything, he'll help you. Be prepared to read. His quizzes aren't terribly difficult, but if you don't read they are a nightmare. The mid term is nothing but intense writing frenzy for the whole class period. I hate the class, but Dr. Lanier is a great teacher.
