Interesting content, however, what made the class so hard was that it was always VERY unclear what was going to be on the exam. He allows for corrections which is a help.

This class was painfully boring. You do very little actual theatre and basically listen to him read recite the script the whole time. Its an easy A you just need to show up but he's not very engaging.

3 papers, 4 tests and Participation. He is a nice person. However, the content is boring. His test expectations are very unclear. Literally is very difficult to know how to prepare. He expects us to know grammar concepts that were not studied in previous courses. The only positive thin is that he offers regrades for all of the assignments.

I am a senior and didnt take him until this semester bc of bad ratings on this websitehuge mistake. I wish I could go back and take him every semester. Class is fun, not a lot of work, a chance to get on your feet and do something artistic. I look forward to it every week. Great chance to speak french without pressure. Also, such a nice man.

A good idea for a class (and a desperately-needed one), but I just didn't like it. Too much being put on the spot, not enough linguistics. I wish there was more homework, honestly--having more concrete opportunities to practice would've been helpful for me, personally.

Easy class except for one test that isn't based at all on class content. If you don't have a background in phonology, you will fail this test. Uninspiring professor in general and hard to stay awake through his painfully boring classes.

He is extremely kind and kind of funny. I'm glad I took his class because it's a fun way to learn French without having to remain sitting for a lecture. It's not meant for actors, but it teaches you a few of the basics about acting. I definitely plan to take another class with him because he is very understanding and focuses a lot on pronunciation.

Dr. Spielmann is an incredible professor, like many reviews said, he is very knowledgeable. I took his class on theater and found out that he is an hilarious actor as well! We learned how to act and he was very patient with us. Reviews that say that is the worst are either stupid or lying. This is Georgetown, expect quality! Take him

An excellent study abroad/immersion, once in a lifetime experience!!! There were so many learning opportunities. Great host families! Fantastic sightseeing both with the group and independently. It's work but you will come back a changed person! I would go back again in a minute! THANKS!

Excellent! The best study abroad experience ever! A great immersion experience -- culture, sightseeing, wine tasting and shopping. Fun and educational. No real tests but everyday you are living, reading, writing, and speaking French. Great Host Families, too! No better way to learn.

Easy class if you want to get an A or A- without doing any work. Literally there was never ANY work. But, I think my french got worse. I learned nothing and the entire class was just trying to sound as French as he does. I can hardly read or write French anymore because this class is like a semester off from french. No homework. ever.

Very knowledgeable-he seems to know something about everything- but not a great professor. Grades are completely arbitrary- even on his syllabus, the percentages do not add to 100. Can rewrite papers/essays, but you don't see the final grade. Lectures have nothing to do with assignments. Very picky.

Possibly the most French french professor you will ever have at Georgetown. The class was kind of ridiculous- no real homework, one test which was impossible but we got to retake with notes. Never used the text, basically tried to teach us how to sound as french as he is...

Very knowledgeable and helpful; regrades papers, so it's actually hard to get a poor grade in the end. You can learn a great deal about French society, politics, and language in this class. Lack of exams means that it's up to you, however. Only real criticism is that his lessons become less structured and informative at the end of the semester.

He is very knowledgeable and very nice; I arrived late lots of times and he never said anything. His class is very interesting and I learned a lot. Only two papers and a final. He doesn't give out a lot of As to start out with because he expects you to hand in a rewrite. Don't worry, take the class, you'll do fine!

He knows everything there is to know about anything that concerns France. He expects a lot from your writing, but gives you ample opportunities to improve your grade (rewrites etc). You will learn a lot and your french will improve, and he's sooo french- it's great.

I love his teaching, he is very charismatic and knowledgeable. His classes are always very interesting and linked to various areas (history of art, literature, history, theatre, movies, society...). He expect a lot from his students but this pushed you to do your best, so you may not be the best immediately but you will learn a lot

This class is pretty interesting but can get technical at times. Dr. Spielmann is a pretty nice & reasonable man, fair grader, very knowledgeable, but you should do all the readings to succeed on the tests. You don't necessarily need any previous knowledge of linguistics to understand what's going on, although some basic knowledge can help.
