Comment:

Sed Pet was a hard class. He's the kind to look for very specific answers (test are open ended questions). He does come off as rude and on the first day he'll literally make you feel like an idiot. That being said, he is kind lol. Behind his mean exterior he is understanding and will listen and show compasion. This is a class you HAVE to work hard

Definitely not an easy class, record the lectures if you can as ppts are mostly just pictures, granted the material is in the textbook. Exams are tough and ask very specific questions that makes you need to know the material well, not just memorize it. PSA: everything post exam 2 comes from the strat book, so make sure you have access to it

Intimidating. Record lectures, video if you can. Powerpoints only have pictures of examples with little text & he goes too fast to take notes. Tests are questions from only some chapters. Cumulative final has chapters he skipped w/ no topics from old tests. Lab is semester-long petrography report. Impressive geologist (worked w/ Folk) ask questions

He is very grumpy; if you don't answer a test question EXACTLY right, he won't count the answer as even partially correct. The lectures felt like he was just trying to prove to us how much he knows, and didn't really care if we learned or not. Each lecture is 100+ ppt slides that he won't post until after class. Gives no direction for what to study

He's a great prof, he's willing to work with you and he makes it clear what you should know for the test mostly why things occur and how if you're planning on memorizing slides, good luck.

Dr Chafetz is extremely knowledgeable and knows his stuff very well and is a captivating presenter. He can be intimidating (he's thrown students out of class), but if you come to class prepared and ready to work you will have no issues. Don't use/check your cell phone. I can't say enough about Dr Chafetz. Best GEO prof! Tests are short answer

Great course! I learned a ton and really enjoyed it. Dr. Chafetz respects students that try hard, and will be hard on students who don't take it serious. If your serious about geology you will love the course!

WORST PROFESSOR IN MY 3 YEARS AT UH!! Took this class for science credit (finance major 3.6 gpa) and ended up dropping after studying my behind of for first test and getting a 40. Test all ESSAY. Most boring and useless lectures. Book is boring. Half the test was over material never mentioned in class. AVOID BY ALL MEANS! HE WILL RUIN YOUR GPA

You can't avoid this guy if your a major, but if you are lucky enough to have a choice, RUN! Don't even give it a second thought, he will ruin your GPA, belittle you the entire semester, and annoy you with his incoherent-rambling lectures. I don't care about his publications, or his reputation, this guy is a horrible professor and human being.

I took him for historical and it sucked. I first class I ever did bad in. He asked the most obscured questions on weekly quizes over the material he hasnt even tought yet. Not everyone can just read the whole chapter and have everything stick :( Avoid if possible.

Great professor. Tough but fair. You will have to work to make it through this class. If you like to hang out in the back with your friends and listen to your cell phone ring tones and giggle, go somewhere else, he doesn't put up with slackage. You will learn much from this guy, and his lectures are interesting. One textbook. He rocks.
