Comment:
255 was the most difficult course, with the most irrelevant content. Bergin did not help us succeed with the tests, and did not make it super relevant to economics, which would have been useful for us. This was one of those courses where I just passed and moved on.

ECON 255: Lots of notes, very heavy on notation, made easy concepts complex. Rarely used board to explain mostly scrolled through his notes on a projector for all lectures. Would have been able to answer questions if anyone understood what he was teaching.

First time teaching 255 and it was one painful semester. His notes and examples are all proofs and theorums not the mention 600 pages of notes overal

Comment:
One of the most intelligent professors in the Queen's economics department. He went through material at a painfully quick pace but if you required further explanation he was always more than happy to assist. Also very dry sense of humor (the effect is greater with his Irish accent).

Comment:
As a not too eager but relatively smart student this guy is ideal. Unlike a lot of classes he lets you think a bit so you can feel some sense of accomplishment after. Good sense of humour too. Also clearly the smartest prof I've had in a mathematical/ analytical sense.

Comment:
Class notes are really clear. Moves through material rather quickly, but if you take the time to work through everything (aka study), you can understand. Tests are extremely fair (only ever a subset of what is taught, and only tests time constraint-feasible concepts). Very supportive and always available to help. One of the best profs I ever had.

he is just brilliant. I could not catch up with him and that is my own problem (you have to be very bright to understand him very well). He is always welcoming also - I was pissed off at some of the comments here and thas why I commented.

Comment:
If you're relatively bright he's a good prof. Some thinking is required for the assignments but I think that's a positive. There's lots of material to cover in the course so that considered he did a good job. Better then some of the other mechanized courses in Queen's econ

Terrible class. Did not provide adequate preparation for assignments midterms or the final. Very smart guy, but doesn't know how to efficiently and successfully relay the course material onto the students. I would never take a course with him again.

Lectures ranged from helpful to completely incomprehensible. Lot of the material isn't complicated but Bergin's notes make them harder to pick up. Overall his lecturing was quite poor.

The biggest problem with Jim is he can't speak up, it's impossible to hear what he is saying. The lack of a textbook doesn't help either as his notes are hard to understand and lack examples.

Don't know why everyone else likes him, but I hate this guy...He makes hard material harder, and his sense of humour is nonexistent. The worst prof I've had at queen's.

Not gonna lie, the material sucks, but the guy is a riot. Irish/English - you make the call. Stuff is horrible, but the class is enjoyable to attend. If you're gonna have to take this awful stuff - do it with him.
