I have had him for calc 3 and 4 and he is a great guy and obviously loves teaching. He can be a bit confusing at times but he encourages you to ask questions if you get lost. Very approachable outside of class. Easy tests as long as you do the suggested problems.

If you never took calculus Osterburg can make the most simplist of things seem imposibly hard.His in class examples and crazy hard and his exams are even harder.However since everyone in your class is bound to do awful he does curve.So as long as you do as equally bad as everyone else you will do just fine.He is quite funny so class can be fun.

He is a really nice guy. It's obvious he knows a lot about calculus but he doesnt know how to teach. I go really confused during his class because he makes up problems and then he cant find the answer. Also, he never uses the textbook

Took him for Calc 1&2. Nice guy, easy to approach after class. Tests are not easy but he curves a lot at the end. Tends to get lost doing extremely complex in class examples. He is overall enjoyable to have in class. Overall not a bad professor, likes Tiger Wood/Golf a lot.

Can be extremely confusing so dont take his class if you havent taken calc before. However, he is always willing to help you after class and is very approachable. Golf often used to explain problems, its halarious.

terrible professor, using the whole class for a single extremely hard example just to find he made a mistake in the first 2 minutes so the whole problem is wrong. half of the material on his exams have nothing to do with anything you have learned in the class, i have had this professor for 4 classes total only because i had to dont take his class

Great guy will help you out! Curve is amazing. I got a 110% on both my Calc 1 and 2 exams. He struggles through lectures often gets stuck on problems he makes up on the spot. Will talk about Tiger Woods frequently.

WOW... where to begin? He confused me so much during lecture, that I sometimes found I was better off not going to class and just reading through the book on my own. He would spend all class on an example, just to reach a point where he didn't know what to do. Do not take his class unless you already have a good grip on calculus.

got an A but only b/c of curve. not very good prof in class but one on one the best teacher ever. go to class b/c he tells little tricks that are on test. jumps around and is frustrating during class but gives great curve (exam average was in 30's) I recommend him

James Osterburg is a nice guy and seems like he means well. However, he is definitely not the best teacher in the world. Many times, he would show an example on the board and an hour later, still have no answer for us, only to find out next class that he copied the example down wrong. He made tons of mistakes and would constantly confuse me.

He's a smart guy, but a pretty bad teacher. Doesnt look at the class when he talks, instead he gazes out the window while explaining. Chooses more difficult problems instead of basic ones while explaining new topics. Expects you to follow along, but makes mistakes sometimes and seems to get lost. If you struggle in math do not take him!!!!!

I dropped this class after about 4 classes, once I realized that I was going to learn nothing. He does not teach anything in class, just goes over random examples and is VERY strange. I really sat there wondering if he was for real the entire time. Quite an experience. If you need someone to guide you through new material, please do not take him.

his tests are pretty easy and he doesn't assign a lot of homework...he basically gives you the answers to the homework before you turn it in. he doesn't write his own final, so it is much different and much more difficult than the other tests. also, he tends not to notice if you raise your hand, so be sure to speak up...decent prof overall...
