Comment:
The name of the class was "Italian Renaissance", but we learned about Greece and all of these other cities that weren't even in Italy. Instead of making powerpoints, he just showed us videos that had nothing to do with our textbooks. Instead of having exams we wrote 3 papers, which sounds good until you find out how hard of a grader he is.

Great professor, lectures were a little dry and boring but the TA?s were a great help. For the midterm and the final he gave the essay questions out a week in advance. He even offered to revise them and help you in the right direction. A few of the discussion groups were used to help make an outline for the exam.

Would post outlines in class on the projectors, then just stand there and lecture. Outlines did not follow what he was talking about. Grading was weird and he changed attendance and participation to 30% of grade. Sent an email saying "I did not assign this reading; I hoped to cover it in class but ran out of time." It of course was on the final.

Comment:
As the course went on it became clear that all we were going to do was discuss the book and watch documentaries that, in many cases, were irrelevant to the reading. He told us half way through the course that participation was most of our grade and made it difficult to do so, and his grading of the 3 papers assigned for the class was inconsistant.

He seemed like a nice enough guy, but he was a bit condescending when it came to the students opinions. His grading scale for the assigned papers was sketchy at best, and not at all consistent. I would NOT recommend this professor.

He seems like a very nice person, but his grading of the three 2/3 page papers was all over the place. He also waited until the last minute to give prompts. In class, no other opinions were "correct" due to him studying with the author and therefore knowing the author's intentions. Stressful classes, full of silence. Do not recommend this professor.

I enjoyed this class. He had us read a variety of books. It was around six years ago but I remember we read "Ordinary Men" and "King Phillips War." I really learned a lot about writing in his class. He tells you exactly what you need to know there is no hidden secrets to find out!

Lectures were interesting. However, his grading systems is impossibly arbitrary. Make certain you clarify what format is expected on exams (go to his office!) Professor was unable to explain why I received a poor grade when confronted.

He seemed knowledgeable about the subject matter, but did not know how to organize a lecture or teach. Also, he was a little sataistic and enjoyed giving students bad grades. He changed the topic of a paper one week before it was due and gave everyone who wrote on the old topic a 0.

This professor tended to bring his personal issues with the university and history dept. into his teaching. He seemed to have a vendetta the quarter i took his class. He loved to be disparaging, and took delight in ego-deflation!
