I was waitlisted for this course and ended missing the first two classes and told him about it and why I missed some of the assignments that were due and he gave me a lot of attitude and said fine hand it by next class. I didn't pay too much attention in this course because of the no midterms and exams, but if you pay attention you'll be fine.

Prof is funny, a fair marker and overall cool and funny guy. Gives good feedback. Made this summer class a breeze. You need to read the textbook if you want to pass the one test.

John can be a tough grader, but he usually gives detailed feedback and goes through the structure of assignments after giving the grades back. As long as you attend class, you don't really need to read the textbook cover to cover - the lectures do a good job of summarizing. The textbook can come in handy for assignments.

As long as you pay attention in class, you'll pass. Don't do CMN online. No midterm or exam, just a series of online quizzes and mini-assignments throughout the semester, and a group presentation at the end. Can be a picky grader, but as long as you look at the given textbook and D2L examples of assignments to model yours off, you'll be good.

He is an amazing guy who likes to really get in-depth about the material(he likes to speak about things repetitively which may make you bored). He is very passionate and cares for students. He is a very hard marker though.

When I first took this class and saw the prof, I came here to check the review. Pretty awful review and was pretty worried about not doing well. Turns out everything I read was absolutely wrong, if you do the work and accept his feedback, you will do fine. Guarantee good mark if you attend all classes and follow the guidelines when presenting.

John really is a great prof. Many people complain that they were unable to receive over an 80 yet I finished with an A. The classes he teaches aren't huge and if you manage to have him know you by name, you'll be getting fine marks. He will always be happy to proofread your assignments before you submit them as well, essentially giving you marks.

Like other people said, he's a decent prof but an incredibly hard marker (compared to what I've heard about other profs who also teach this course). No matter what I did, I couldn't get more than an 80 on the assignments, which he only explains in class. Bought the textbook and it was basically useless but the online simulation was easy.

Comment:
When speaking to students in any context he is extremely condescending. His assignments are fairly easy but he marks them with the wrath of the seven hells. No assignment instructions are on d2l, you receive everything in class. If you are looking to take this class as an easy credit, don't expect to get a mark over 80.

Lots of assignments. Extremely unhelpful over email, generally replies with one sentence. Extremely difficult to get an A, never saw him give above an 80. Boring lecture, but often lets class out early. John Burry is an OK guy and an average professor. He did give compliments to people who surpassed his expectations on assignments, though.

John was an okay professor. He gave good feedback and was good at explaining assignments. The class was not very exciting, and attendance counted. He can be a tough grader at times.

I don't think anybody in my class ever received a grade over 80%. Extremely tough marker, but chill class otherwise. Lectures ended early most days.

He doesn't use blackboard or reply to emails quickly, and hardly refers to the textbook. If you miss class, there's no hope. As well, John doesn't give out anything higher than a 75%. But, He is generous with not giving deductions on late assignments and giving back assignments quickly. Overall, an ok prof, but would not be my first choice.

He comes off intimidating but if you just try to talk to him about any questions you might have, he's a really nice guy! Friend and I didn't know we had an assignment due that class, and he gave us time to the end of the day to hand it in without marks being dropped.

I genuinely like him. Seems intimidating, but is actually a nice guy once you speak to him. He's clear when he's presenting, but when he tells you what he wants, it isn't specific and still confusing. I'd say that he is fair when critiquing. Prepare well for your individual presentation at the end of the semester and really edit your papers.

He was by far my least favourite professor. There is nothing tought in class, and he doesn't use blackboard. The course mainly relies on student's own work. His classes are at least an hour short. Do not recommend him at all.

Comment:
John Burry is an alright professor, great thing about him is that he makes classes short, but unfortunately he never hands out grades greater then 80%. CMN 124 Is a really boring course, and ultimately it depends on your prof for the grade you get. Overall, he's an alright prof and does make the occasional joke.
