Great class. Brilliant teacher. If you are interested in learning about Cultural Translation and the Ethics of Transculturalism while at the same time developing a deep critical relationship to language, this is the class for you.

Maria is a fantastic professor who demands a lot from her students. Those who don't put effort into their studies aren't going to enjoy her class. Fortunately, Maria doesn't care if you like her. She pushes you regardless, which is exactly what a college professor should do. If you think she's arrogant, it's only because she's smarter than you.

Best prof ever. Her intense discussion is often taken for arrogance or rudeness... Its not the case. Shes excited and wants her students to understand the dense concepts her classes cover. She loves her work and is good to her students. The subject material is hard but it will open your mind. Take her and don't believe the haters!

Brilliant. Hard as hell, and you have to do *extra* work beyond what's assigned to get through. If you do though, it's definitely worth it. Some profs at Emerson are phoning it in for health insurance while working on their own projects. Maria is serious about teaching and won't accept less from her students. Best class I had at Emerson.

Really not that good of a professor. She's very self-absorbed and only shows interest in a few select students. She's one of those professors who wants you to parrot back her opinions to get a good grade--this really isn't how higher education should work.

Though people claim she's brilliant, Maria's arrogance is so overwhelming that you can't help but think she's as important/intellighent as she thinks she is. (But it just isn't the case.) She's very snappy and impatient, is rude to students, and openly plays favorites. Beware.

By far the best prof. I've had at Emerson. Maria is the real deal, a hardcore academic, unlike the drudges grinding out a class to pay for their own projects. She'll make you work, and she requires you to back up your statements, but she grades fairly and you'll learn more than you thought possible about subjects you didn't think you cared about.

I took Maria for a graduate class in aesthetics. That was one of the toughest subjects I've studied, and Maria was not very helpful. There didn't seem to be a lot of forethought about how to present information in way that would be clear to students. Her method of teaching is personal rambling.

Maria's class is awesome, and I highly suggest taking IWW if you are looking for a course that will challenge you and force you to think critically (which ideally should be every class, but oh well). The material is interesting, the prof is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, and you will exit the class with a new understanding of non-Western literature.

I have now taken both Brit Lit and International Women Writers with Maria, and I have to say that she is one of maybe 4 professors at Emerson who have made my entire career here worthwhile. She IS difficult, but if you're interested and you do the work and you participate, you actually FEEL smarter when you leave her class.

Difficult stuff to understand at first, but she expects you to.And, it's a 400-level class.I don't know why anyone would complain about a 400-level class being too hard. That's the point. She makes class feel like it's actually college, instead of babying you.She recognizes that you're an adult, which is refreshing. If you're wrong, she says so.Do it.

Maria is clearly a brilliant woman, but her class consists of lecturing, getting on a roll, and then going way over her students' heads. Reading all of the text is crucial if you want to be able to follow her and participate in class, which is expected. Enlightening if you take the time, this class requires all of your attention and brain power.

Maria is a phenomenal teacher who won't stand by while students propose any opinion they'd like. She's a well respected and published scholar who will set you on the right path. Come with an open mind or get out of her classroom. I have been extremely lucky to have her twice and can't recommend her to serious students enough.

Probably the best instructor I've ever learned from in my entire life. I'd urge anyone to take all of Maria's classes.
