Hard class to get an A in, but interesting if you are open minded. Great reading list. Dont disagree with her, or she will give you a bad grade.

Having taken 3 courses with her, I understand why her ratings are so polarized. YES she picks favorites, YES you will only get good grades if you write only about things which she totally agrees. She pretends to be open minded but her method of grading and judging are far, far beyond hypocracy.

I can't believe that people have negative things to say here. Do the reading, participate in class discussion, and either make up your own test or write a paper. Wonderful teacher, but don't take this class if you are not willing to see different points of view. You don't have to share it but at least try to understand and you will do fine!

She could be very mean in class if you disagreed with her. She called me a **** on one of my papers. I did an experiment: for one of the tests I did not study at all, then in my essays agreed with her on everything. I aced it. Awful teacher, avoid her like the plague. She does pick favorites and is EXTREMELY biased.

I've had Marietta for three classes, and it's thanks to her that I am now a philosophy major. The things I learned in these classes have changed my life. Her classes are SO easy as long as you put genuine thought and effort into your work. She is tough, but fair, and I found her to be very helpful and understanding. Leave a closed mind at the door.

Amazing teacher - go to class...its worth it. A few kids in my class never came, and they were so removed from conversations...Great class - everyone should take it!

I went in to her class being interested in the subject and came away hating it. I am a logical thinker and had some trouble with the "personal" papers she wanted, and she was not at all helpful in explaining to me how to meet her standards. She was inconsistent in her grading and it was very hard to figure out what she wanted.

A wise woman and terrific teacher. Beautiful inside and out. Her class is challenging and she'll make you work, but it is worth it! She's not difficult to approach or unwilling to help. If you're a good student and really trying, she will support you. If you're a slacker trying to make excuses, she won't take your BS. Marietta rocks!

Marietta's classes are not your average community college classes...she doesn't want to read run-of-the-mill research papers, she wants personal experience tied into larger existential themes. Not for the uncreative thinker, all of the paper topics are entirely up to you. In my experience she was very approachable. Just be prepared to do the work

I think a lot of people judge her unfairly because she presents the topics as a believer would- it doesn't directly translate into her opinion. She is fair and hard, knows her stuff. Be open to new ideas and the class will be enjoyable.

I've taken four of Marietta's classes, so I feel qualified to share an informed opinion about her teaching. She is incredible, and most students absolutely love her.. which is why so many people go ahead and take all of the classes she teaches. She is polarizing, so there are those that can't stand her. Rise to the challenge and open your mind.

Harder than Chinese algebra. No syllabus for papers and clarity is certainly not a gift of hers. Watch out I you are going to take one of her courses. Her demeanor is also very aggressive, contrary to what she portrays in class.

This teacher has no value except as a joke. She presumes to teach about Tao and Zen and then completely fails to integrate basic concepts from those philosophies into her life. She has major ego issues and will give you a D for disagreeing with anything she says or criticizing anything she assigns. *Do not* express your opinion in her class.

Marietta is very intelligent and knows this subject well. However, if your opinion does not match hers expect a poor grade on your papers. I wrote a college level paper on abortion. I'm pro-life and Marietta is CLEARLY pro-choice. I was given a D- on the paper. Another student wrote a paper on her black friend at elementary level and got an A+

Her opinion rules overall. if you write a paper that doesn't coincide with her beliefs, she gives you a F or nothing. Which happened to me, and I wrote a very professional paper about why the Ganges was polluted ... a girl wrote a paper on how the guy from Andy Griffith was like a buddha, and got an A Plus. BLARRR!!!!!! STAY AWAY

She teaches only what aspects of philosophy interest her. (Her main interest being getting free meals from any student who works in an in-town restaurant). She picks "favorites," and only respects people whose opinions are the same as her own--doesn't really make for any interesting philosophical debates.

She was very hard to get along with and not willing to put in extra time to help the student succeed in the class. Also on tests when she asks your opinion your opinion is always and hers in write. She should just ask for her opinion on tests.
