Yes, it's a hard class. And yes, if you are not a fan of history you may not like the class. But if you want a challenge, are interested in history, and want a passionate teacher who knows his stuff, this is the class to take.

Dr. Spaulding made this class much harder than it should be. There is not that much work but he grades the essays extremely hard. The class was the hardest 101 class I have ever taken. He thinks he is soooo smart and makes sure to let you know.

You literally won't get an A in this class. He grades way too hard for a 101 class. His TA's grade for him and their grading is so subjective. He does nothing online and does not allow you to email him. if you want to contact him it has to be in person. You won't know your grade until after the semester. This class is the reason I don't have a 4.0

Let me start by saying that professor Spaulding is a fantastic teacher. He is extremely passionate when it comes to teaching; however, that does not elude the fact that he grades papers in this class with extreme precision. I would make sure to go to class and take excellent notes. TIP: When writing your Essays, make sure to answer precisely.

Literally the worst professor I have ever had at the University. He is a hard grader so I decided to go to a TA for extra help and therefore thought I would got a good grade on the paper and it was a D. The class is completely unfair. Half of the paper go to the TA's for grading and the others to the professor. TAKE SOMETHING ELSE!! Rudest man ever

This guy is very passionate about his course, I truly do enjoy his lectures and have learned a lot from him. He is also one of the hardest graders I have ever experienced. I would consider myself a good writer but got a C on my first paper. I love the guy though much respect for him. If you do end up having to take him dont worry its not that bad.

This is an introductory class surprisingly (harsh grader), and consists of map assignments & 4 big tests that are essays. Just b/c you are good at writing papers will not make this an easy A.. SO IMPORTANT to take good notes, attend class, and make sure to go to his or TAs office hours. Introduce yourself too. Do this & you will get a good grade.

Professor Spaulding is a great professor!! His classes are lecture heavy, but he makes them interesting and never boring. No phones on in class. Provides notes at beginning of every class. Map assignments where you literally color and dot different locations. 3 main essays, with clear expectations. Very approachable and easy to talk to!!

Mr. Spaulding is a nice guy, he just is way too harsh on grading. Tests are long essays that are meticulously graded almost to the point that your paper is completely covered in red ink. His map assignments are down to the cm and are not bad but too difficult for a simple map. If you like a challenge, this is your guy.

He is very passionate but I would also say too passionate... if this was a 3/400 level course I would understand but this is 101 and it's the hardest class I've taken. He grades ruthlessly.. its almost impossible to do well at feels like.

Professor Spaulding is so smart and you can tell by the way that he teaches he is incredibly knowledgeable. However, his lectures are all spoken. He gives you an outline at the beginning of class which is nice but it is easy to tune him out and fall asleep. He's not bad and is very approachable, however class can be very boring.

He doesn't use powerpoints in class, so you just have to take notes while he talks, but he gives out a sheet at the beginning of every class that has what he's going to discuss on it. You cannot use your phone in his class either or he'll send you out, but he's a nice guy, just a lot of papers.

Passionate about his work, but not liking history can make this class extremely difficult. The tests are essays, but the class comes up with the questions the class before. Overall, this class is pretty boring.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this class, but it turned out to be more difficult than I originally expected. The reading assignments were time consuming and the tests were difficult in what was expected of them. Attend the lectures, take great notes, and at least skim through the book. He tells you what he wants on the tests, so listen.

Is extremely passionate and knowledgable about what he teaches making paying attention in class easier. Never took attendance and hardly required feedback during class but really easy to start an open discussion that is student initiated. Only homework is the exams, the more you study, the better you will do. Would choose again in future.

As a student who genuinely loves UNCW and has enjoyed all of my professors, this class is the exception. I have never had a professor who was so arrogant and showed such distaste for his students, especially those who do participate. His tests were essays each time and very hard to understand. I would discourage anyone form taking this class.

He is a fair grader. He gave us a really hard syllabus at the beginning of the semester, but didn't follow it after realizing how hard it was. Studied for the two tests we had the day before and got a B+ on the first and A+ on the second. You only read things that will be required on essays. He's awesome & supes friendly!

Professor Spaulding was by far one of my favorite History professors at UNCW. He is very passionate about what he teaches, and manages to throw in some humor in here and there to make otherwise dry material more interesting. He assigns 5 map assignments, a book report, and three tests (which are only one or two essay questions each.) Highly liked!

Dr. Spaulding assumes that everyone in his class is a history buff. Essay tests and he gives you the topic a few days ahead of time, but that means he expects it to be "the best thing he's ever read" since you've had so much time to prepare. The catch is, you have to MEMORIZE your essay, and come in to write it the day of the exam with no notes.

He's really passionate about the subject, which makes class a little bit easier at 8 a.m. Extremely clear on what he wants for essay tests, very helpful. Overall great professor-I find the material in this class extremely boring, but he makes it bearable because of his passion and just by being a super nice guy.
