If you're at all interested in being a GDS concentrator, here's my advice: TRANSFER, and study it somewhere else. With this guy as the head of the concentration, you're going to drop that idea w/in the first week of intro, when you think about having to take more classes w/ this guy. Awful at handling questions, returning assignments, + much more.

Very very hard - a lot more work than all other tutorials (to my knowledge). Class was rather unstimulating, but he seems well educated in his subject area, but much of that could not be applied to a tutorial, which made it boring! We did a lot of repititous reading and assignments.

Roper is the worst prof I've had here. You're better off buying the text and spending your time reading it if you really want to learn Anthro as opposed to sitting through him talk in class. He knows very little, is extremely unclear with his assignments and test questions, and grades harshly despite the guessing-game nature of the assignments.

Roper is...average. There are so many profs at Grinnell who are above average, so average isn't really a compliment. His lectures are slow and boring, and he isn't knowledgeable outside of fieldwork. He provides no insight on cultural anthro; it's like having a student with a lesson plan teaching the class. But, he's not terrible. Kinda go

Its been two years since I took this class but I still clearly remember that I did two projects during that course that would have, under most other circumsntaces, been final projects. He is interesting as all get out during his lectures (he's actually been there, which helps) but his assignments are hard and he is not always very helpful.

Avoid for Theories courses. He's lost. Roper needs to go back to doing Applied Anthropological fieldwork, at which he excels, and out of the classroom, where he does not.

This course was really interesting with a nice mix of lectures and discussion, and some cool readings. Roper could have more quickly gotten assignments back to us, but he was very clear in covering the material and always made plenty of time to answer questions in the class or his office.

boring, dry lecturer. grades very subjectively according to his own opinion - comments on one paper with a lowered grade began and focused mainly "i do not agree." a nice guy personally, lots of stories based on personal experience, but grinnell has so many other wonderful profs to choose from.

I was not very impressed with the class. I felt that I could have learned more, especially with regard to the cultural section. We didn't read enough academic articles on culture and didn't read enough different view points. I realized this after talking to kids from other schools.

Roper's class, although focused on many of my interests, was somewhat monotonous and rather boring at times. His lack of creativity regarding learning styles, as well as his unwavering academentia were both factors in making his class a waste of time.

You're all nuts. He's the best instructor I've ever had at Grinnell, and he ROCKS! All your complaints seem to stem from the fact that he assigns too much work-- well, if you don't like reading about development, don't take GDS!

He will work you hard and is no easy grader. However, he's actually served in Bolivia as someone who helped develop a small village there and he kind of knows everything and coveys it well. He definately has a political slant, as so all of his readings.
