Nings class is interesting, challenges you, and he is an overall nice guy. He speaks his mind and tells you how he feels which can be both refreshing and off putting for some. I loved his class and appreciated all of the effort he would put into giving feedback on our essays. Ning is a gem!

Amazing professor! Thought provoking lectures, super funny. We had no homework other than reading, and had a quiz on each book which we reviewed for in class, sometimes on the day of the quiz so it was super easy. 10/10 would recommend, I'm entering the English major and hope to get a chance to take more classes with him.

Professor wastes class by telling the same personal stories time and again. I didn't learn anything new or gain writing skills. All you do is read books and write superficial questions about them to get an easy A. Class discussion goes nowhere insightful. He is a nice Professor, just does not know how to teach students useful analytical skills.

Ning does a fantastic job of presenting the literature and connecting it to the world around you. He has a fascinating life which you'll learn a lot about, but he does tend to go on tangents making class discussion rushed. You're graded on a presentation, a final paper, participation, attendance, and five questions with a one-page response.

Ning is an amazing professor!!! If you need structure in your assignments perhaps he's not for you. Ning treats his students like fellow critics so he allows a lot of creative freedom when it comes to essay writing. It's fairly easy to get an A in his class, if you show up and really participate in the discussions. I can't rave about him enough!

Yu is an interesting prof. with rich life experience, but this class fell short of my expectations. He went off on long tangents that took up the entire class period (e.g. his retirement plans) & we never got any critical feedback on assignments. This might make a great intro class, but felt intellectually frustrating for a 300-level lit. seminar.

you should make an a if you show up and read the books. hell, actually don't even bother with the books, he goes over the questions on the quiz immediately before handing them out so there's no reason to make a bad score.

Ning was the best professor I have had at Western. Asian Lit is the class I've learned the most in as well. He runs the class like a discussion about each book that you read and he goes over the quiz questions and answers right before you take the quiz.

He exceeded my expectations! In class we would normally go over the novels in depth (which prepares you for the in-class quizzes), have class discussions about the novels and his lectures on the books. I think he is fair when he grades the quizzes and he offers quiz retakes if you are absent or sick. I wish I could take more classes from him!

This was probably my least favorite class here. This professor's teaching mechanisms were unclear and unnecessary. The syllabus was always changing and many homework assignments were deleted/added minutes before class would start making it impossible to actually be on top of your work in this class. He didn't answer emails. Not the smoothest class.

My favorite professor at WWU. Has a fabulous approach to education in general and tries to make everything very personal. Yes, he is critical of the work that you turn in, but if you wish to correct your mistakes and resubmit, he is always open to that. I think he is very fair and wants people to do well. Take a class with him!

Do you struggle with discussion-oriented classes? Well tough s*it, buddy because that's how the class is run. The coursework is difficult and professor Yu is a very strict/tough grader. Definitely not for everyone.

Real nice guy, and quite intelligent. However, his grading is terrible. This is a class where it doesn't matter how much you learn or how well you do on the assignments/tests, you just have to say "what you found interesting" as many times throughout the meetings as possible.

Yu's "style" of letting students lead discussion means that many class sessions were wasted because he did not keep students on task and often allowed them to argue inane points that had no real relevance. Student presentations often had no connection to the text and were pointless. I stopped reading after week two and got a B+, but I dreaded class

Although I find Early American Lit. to be extremely boring, I absolutely love professor Yu. I have had him for two other classes as well, and have enjoyed him as a prof each time. The key to understanding his pedagogy is to disagree with him/the text. The class pace is on the slower side; however, he is incredibly intelligent and sweet!

Still love his style of allowing the students direct the class discussion & lecture. Having to watch videos for class outside of class time was a little bit of a hassle, but not a big deal. He also allowed the students to create most of the questions for the midterm & final so it was practically guranteed to pass them.
