Comment:
If you are a African-American student do not take his class! I am white and he treated 2 of my AA friends who took his class with me sickeningly bad. Was very accusatory and pusillanimous toward them and their work for baseless and speculative reasons, and they were both deans list students throughout @ USM! This occurred in '02. Glib and pompous.

I took Polk for a Southern lit. class my last year at USM in '02. He was very smart and knowledgeable BUT unfair: his book selections were very limited when it came to African-American literature,& there's alot of it out there that defines the genre, yet he used 2 commonly known books most have read before. His discipline of students was misguided.

Tough cookie at first, but you learn more than you ever thought possible. He's a great teacher and uses appropriate materials. Gosh, he's missed.
