Dr. Paine was a tough grader but he was also really helpful at providing feedback and he gave many opportunities to make up your grade. Our whole class pretty much failed the first speech & did really bad in the second one but he gave us the chance to redo either one at the end of the year. He'll seem scary at first but he's really understanding.

This was a VERY hard class but not impossible. You will be reading multiple chapters a week and is lecture heavy. There are 2 papers, 2 tests and a presentation. He lays out clear rubrics and what to know for everything. Come to class prepared and you will be fine. If you work in the class, Dr. Paine will do anything to help you out.

READ THIS. You will not have many tests. If the class participates enough he will barely give out short pop quizzes. There are NO multiple choice tests. There are 3 ESSAY exams. I don't mean short or long answer I mean you have to write two essays in a class session. This is only hard because he expects you to remember every fact and every detail.

Be prepared to write 30+ pages if you take this class. Midterm and Final are essay response and expect to remember everything and write a lot for those too. Also does not have listed office hours. Nice guy and keeps lectures interesting but has ridiculous expectations for his students.

Mixed feelings about this. Professor Paine is a cool guy, and gives great lectures, but is impossibly difficult. I dedicated so much time and effort to this course and it was not possible to manage this course along with three others and a job. This course was the reason I went back on anxiety medication.

I have Richard as an argumentation teacher and a coach. I can honestly say, that Richard Paine is a great human. His lectures are awesome. He is very clear and involves you so you understand what he is trying to say. He IS a hard grader though. Expect the tests to be his lectures word for word. I advise creating a relationship with him. He is great

Dr. Paine is an Excellent Professor if you are willing to put the work in. His Tests are Brutally hard but possible if you spend time studying and Memorizing material. As a whole, after this class I truly know the material and he challenged me to become a more well rounded student. AMAZING MAN, VERY HELPFUL. GREAT PROFESSOR. Just a Difficult Test

He is passionate and makes the lectures interesting, but his homework expectations are unrealistic, especially for a gen ed class. I resent that he has told me he likes the material in my papers and still grades them below an A solely because they're only two pages longer than the requirement. Unless you're a comm. major, don't take his classes.

Professor Paine is one of those instructors that makes you work harder that you'll ever work, yet is one of the most rewarding and inspiring Professor's I've ever known. He cares about his students, and speech! If you make it through his tough class, you'll be forever grateful to him. It was a true joy to have him as a Professor!

Professor Paine is the best and most inspirational teachers you will ever have. His class is difficult, but assignments are clear, and lectures are interesting. You will certainly be a better speaker after his Advanced Public Speaking class, and he teaches you tools that will carry you far beyond the class. Most amazing professor I have ever had.
