Comment:

I would strongly advise not taking ANY classes with Prof. Hsu. She gives zero feedback throughout the entire semester leaving everyone feeling quite anxious. She encourages you to reach out to her if you have any questions or concerns, but there is often no response to emails and her answers tend to sort of beat around the bush. Very unsatisfied.

Comment:

I took her online class for spring 19 and she wasn't that bad. At first, it is hard to get in contact and I talked to other students who just didn't like her and dropped. However, she was really nice to me and gave me good feedback. She isn't lenient on due dates so make sure to do all your work and put some effort in it, you can get an A or B.

Professor Hsu gives vague instructions, goes on tangents in every class, does not show any expertise, teaches nothing about the texts, is shockingly inarticulate, highly politicizes her class, strictly requires attendence, cannot remotely stay on schedule, and offers nothing worth paying for. Please consider taking your business elsewhere.

I think Professor Hsu means well, but may not always come off that way. After reading reviews I was hesitant to take her class but I took her Single Author course online and it wasn't that bad... You have to do the work, and she held online mandatory consultations but they were helpful if you aren't understanding something. Maybe try on online!

Pros: nice; well knowledgeable; flexible; understanding Cons: Rambles (She'll explain something to the class & explain it again 3 more times); lectures can get boring if she doesn't get to the point; doesn't explain assignments on time; wastes class time (she spent 1 week talking about the same exact thing)

Maybe it depends on the course, but I thought the reviews were pretty harsh for Professor Hsu. She does ramble at bit, but she has excellent analysis for literature, and if you follow her grading rubric you'll do fine. Attendance required. Calm and helpful. If you just shows some interest in the subject, unlike many students, she's quite likable.

Comment:

I learned so much in her Eng 320 class - the class required for all English majors at UH. I like working hard and growing as a student, and the way she teaches is soil, water, sun, and fertilizer for this. Her class was the first in which I earned a "D" on a draft, and she provided constructive feedback and helped me hone my skills.

I have never had a problem with a teacher in my life, but I guess it just takes that ONE professor. Never answers emails. Always rude in class. Doesn't stick to the book or the syllabus or anything for that matter. She WILL fail your assignments. Changes grading and requirements for assignments in the middle of the semester. STAY. FAR. AWAY.

She is the most out of touch professor I have ever had. She provides incorrect information, does not demonstrate expertise, and offers "filler" lectures (in a seminar course!) that discourages and limit productive discussion. She is also extremely inconsistent in her teaching style and provides very confusing expectations. stay away.

During the semester she seemed difficult, but I could tell she wanted to help as much as she could. She turned out to be an easy grader. She's not very interesting or much of a people person, but she got straight to the point. Kind of quirky. Would not recommend if you're looking for a "fun class". Take this class only of you're there to learn.

Prof. Hsu does get off topic a lot &talks slowly,&her lectures can get boring. Sometimes she talks about interesting things,but I really wanted to work on our essays in class rather than just talk about what we read for hw. Keep up with the essays ,esp. if you're taking her in the summer, they're not really that hard, and make sure you do all the pre-writing b/c she likes to see your process. She passed me w/a C+ even tho I didn't do all the essays;if you really try she might pass you.shes nice

One of the worst English professor, i question her degree She would use up the whole class to lecture how to do an essay the day it is due, which almost all of it are useless info. When you come to her office hours for feedback, she either doesn't read your essay or only reads the first page of one. so her feedback aren't helpful. Stay away!

Terrible class. Goes of syllabus often. Gives confusing convoluted answers to simple questions. Rambles about politics instead of the literature that is supposed to be the focus. Incredibly boring style of speaking. She will tell you that did "fantastic" on an assignment then proceed to give you a bad grade.

I do not recommend people register with this professor. More than half the students dropped this class. I only finished it because I need a "WI" to graduate. The classes are boring, she goes off syllabus, and you do not learn anything.

She has very strong progressive political views, and is very antagonistic towards students with opposing views. This is reflected in her grading. If you enjoy butting heads with the professor, this is the class for you. If you prefer a more mellow classroom experience,avoid this professor.
