Very funny guy. He grades harshly on papers, but if you go to his office hours he will explain what he wants.

Dr. Simkins is a great professor who challenges his students to think critically about their readings. His office hours are a must, so that you understand his grading criteria. He gives great feedback if you present him your paper before it's due, and his class is very discussion heavy. His exams come straight from the discussions, so take notes.

Simkins is an entertaining guy. When it comes to papers, he has a very clear vision for what he wants, so GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Made a C on my first paper and an A on the rest because I'd get him to review my papers 2-3 times before turning them in. He gives good feedback and will give you an A if you put the time in.

Dr. Simkins is a very quirky guy. His class was incredibly hard and I struggled to maintain a C in his class. He is an incredibly hard grader. He gives random pop quizzes on readings that are sometimes 20+ pages. He puts you in a group for the semester and every class makes you stand a present the question from the reading he assigns to your group.

Dr. Simkins is a decent enough professor. His classes are usually student led in groups, which makes time go by faster. He is a super strict grader on the essays and tests. There are lots of pop quizzes on the assigned reading, and there is mandatory attendance. At the end of the semester we had a final essay, epoftfolio, AND a hard final exam.

Dr. Simkins is quirky and I enjoyed his class. It's important to read before class for sure. He grades the papers pretty strictly but so it's definitely worth taking your time. His office hours are super helpful and he wants you to pass if you're showing that you are putting forth the effort. Wish I could take him for post-1865.

Quirky guy for sure. There was 3 papers worth 5% each and the final paper is 15%. Papers are graded super easily. Unfortunately the midterm is 20% of your grade and the final is 35% and those are tougher. There are also 5 pop quizzes over readings and an e-portfolio over your papers. Not the worst but definitely not a walk in the park.

I really enjoyed Dr. Simkins' class and like him as a teacher. He's very quirky but it makes class more interesting. He's a pretty easy grader and gives specific requirements for papers; if you follow them you shouldn't have a problem getting an A. Theres some reading but its easy. He also really cares about his students and their success

He's funny and he had us work in groups the whole time which I liked but I would not take the class with him again. His tests are difficult and ask very specific things from class that you would not think you need to memorize. He doesn't grade the essays extremely hard but he takes off for dumb things like bold title or not double spaced heading

Dr. Simkins is really knowledgable about literature and willing to help. Everyone says he is really hard, but if you go to class and read you can definitely get an A. Also go to your GTA's office hours to get help on papers and you will be fine.

He has an interesting, but good sense of humor. The readings were too long sometimes, especially considering it was a core class. The tests and assignments were easy if you write down what he says in class. I enjoyed the class. Only 2 tests and bi-weekly short papers.

He's really nice and super helpful. There's some reading it's not bad. The only grades he has are 5 essays and a presentation (which is your final) but if you ask him for help and go to his office you should make an A no problem. The only thing bad I would say is his page requirements are kinda long so make sure you have a lot to talk about.

There is a lot of reading. It's a freaking Lit class, so suck it up and get your core credits out of the way. He is an enrapturing lecturer and gives plenty of historical background and stories to accompany your texts. If you read and show up for class, you will pass. There is no surprise material. He is funny and has a great love for the subject.

Simkins is one of the most entertaining teachers you will ever have. He is also one of he most informative. Admittedly, he is kind of weird. But he is quite personable and loves his subject. Would recommend him.

Probably the worst and most painful class I have ever taken. He is very vague in what he wants from you in the papers and still grades them pretty tough. However, he grades the midterm and final fairly easy. A new assigned reading for each class and a quiz. The class drags on and is super boring. Would not recommend to anyone, take someone else!

Great professor!I had him for Early American Lit & he really gets nerdy with the stuff he knows. He is a difficult grader but if you participate in class, do the readings (there is a lot due every class time), & visit him at least once in his office, you will pass. Papers are a bit tricky but not too difficult. Just be nice & he'll return the favor

He has daily quizzes that are not too bad but you can skim the text to get a general idea of it and pass all of them. He has two papers that are fairly vague in what he wants. Doesn't have a rubric on papers so you don't know what he's counting off for, mid term is not too bad. He makes awkward jokes that don't really make people laugh.

One of the worst people I think I've ever met. Acts like he's smarter than every person sitting in a desk. You have a quiz every day that's not hard but expects WAY to much for the midterm and final. Let's just say I tried to get out of his class but couldn't... I'd advise you to stay far away.
