if decide to choose, must be prepare recorder, cause if u can't type or write as fast as he read, then u need to learn by yourself. No PPT, unhelpful guidelines. will never never take this prof's course.

I really liked Sean. I felt his grading criteria was clear and he was incredibly accessible outside of class. I would take another class with him. Make sure to show up to class, as he doesn't post on Coursespaces and do your readings. Get his advice on your paper. Just the usual.

Great professor! He is very clear on the material and explains things very well and in an interesting way. Funniest professor so far as well. Can be a tough grader, but outlines exactly what he wants in assignments and tests.

A hidden gem of the department! Really enjoyed Dr. Hier and his TA, Nicola. I don't understand all the bad reviews - he does get off topic sometimes but he's clearly passionate and ENJOYS teaching. He's hilarious and shows lots of videos to keep people engaged. Very fair grading. Really enjoyed the content and I hope he teaches more courses!

I went in to this class expecting it to be a lot more engaging and interesting. The lectures were often fairly dull even though Sean was competent in the material. I felt like this class would have been a lot more tolerable if the lecture was split into two parts instead of a three hour lecture.

Sean is very knowledgeable and fairly well known in his domain, he does attempt to excite students about these things as well, but fails. He's a very tough grader, and his lectures are hard to sit through. Much of what he teaches is difficult to understand and takes time to fully grasp.

He is a very good professor and very knowledgable about the material. Sometimes concepts can be a biy hard to understand in class but if you go to see him he explains them really well.

Sean's lectures are very dry. He is quite knowledgeable on his subject matter but doesn't break it down or make it interesting enough for his class. Do not take this course if you're looking for an easy elective!

Great prof who took great care in making sure that students knew his expectations. He was always available to talk and was through with his information. However, don't expect to just talk to him through e-mails: he prefers to speak one on one because of the detail he puts in. Lectures were a little scattered, but concepts were frequently revisited.

Sean is a global leader in the social problems and moral panic fields. It was very exciting to learn about current content and studies. Sean's lectures can be a bit tangential and take longer than he expects, but he is fair about testing material and wants students to succeed. Show up to class and take good notes--his lecture slides are useless.

Best class/professor I've ever taken/had. He is intelligent, witty, and always there to help out. Many students say he's a tough marker, but as long as you put in the effort, show up to class (not hard, lectures are very fun), and do the readings, you will do great. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who has an interest in SOCI or CRIM.

I was highly disappointed in this class. Sean makes the class extremely confusing and dry. He is smart but does not take into account that you're not as smart as him and you're expected to know terms that have not been explained. Doesn't focus on current social problem articles as examples but ones from 10 years ago that he's featured in.

Horrible class. Don't take if you don't have to. You are required to write summaries of his articles every week that he marks very harshly (on top of other assignments). He assumes you are just as smart as him and that you are aware of all social problems have have existed in the last 20 years even if his students were not born when they occurred.

Sean seems like a very intelligent guy but is not very good at teaching. His lectures are extremely confusing because he mentions lots of new concepts that he assumes you already know, although there are no prereqs for this class. The course could be very interesting because of the content but Sean makes it very boring and hard for no reason

Sean is one of my favourite profs hands down. He is extremely smart, but his lectures are crucial. He does go on a lot of tangents, but he is there to help you no matter what. His tests are very straight forward, but you must attend class to know what's going on.

Not bad. Learned some new perspectives for sure. Most important thing to know is that Sean over thinks everything and has a very particular, rambling style - go to class and read his articles and you'll start to understand him. The more you can get inside his head the better you'll do in the course.

Comment:
His lectures are hard to follow, he's intelligent and it translates into a confusing lecture especially for a 200-level course. is papers are even harder to follow (both those written by him and written by others), lots of use of jargon and wordiness. However, if you attend lectures and attempt to pay attention, studying for tests is a lot easier
