I enjoyed Professor Hovan's class. He tried to make sure everyone understood the material. Daily quizzes were given through an online website, which weren't bad. He left halfway through the semester so we had to teach ourselves online. He still gave us oppurtunities to raise our grades even as he was out at sea. Good professor overall.

Good Professor, makes points clear and will answer questions. He really wants students to learn and understand the material. Pay attention, take good notes, and of course study and the tests are not bad. At least one test question will be based on the labs! There is a research paper for the class as well, interesting topics.

Nice guy. Geoscience department chair and has been teaching for a long time. Just powerpoints to follow during lecture, a few exams and a research project. Writing intensive but not much too much work. If you have a free elective, take it. Interesting material and worthwhile if you like learning about Earth's Oceans.

I'm a major and have gotten to know all of the professors in this small department. None of the professors are easy and they shouldn't be. You're in college, classes should be challenging but manageable. Dr. Hovan is a very nice man and chairperson of the department. He has high expectations for every student but will help you whenever needed.

Always willing to help. AND if you don?t understand from him, go to the tutors, THEY ARE THE BEST! He will tell you about them if you ask. Read the book. It is a hard class, regardless of the class level; geology is a difficult subject and requires time to understand. I got a B in the class but greatly increased my understanding.

Beware of uncovered material. He expects you to know things that were never covered in his lecures. Quizzes seem to be purposely confusing to intentionally throw you off. I have an A in this class and still dislike his methods. Its college, its suposed to be difficult but not misleading. This class will ruin you semester and add uneeded stress.

he's a nice guy. but he treats the class as if we are all geoscience majors. he gets way to detailed with his explanations and being that for most of us it is just a liberal studies requirement alot of us aren't interested making sitting through his lecture extremely confusing and painful. not recommended.

These comments below stun me, i think dr.hovan is brilliant. His tests are hard but it's college it's supposed to be, he allows us to use a notecard on them and offers office hours to anyone who wants to go over their test more. I'm definitley going to try to take him again next year. He told us he knows it is an elective and he will treat it as so

Oceanography labs are a bit confusing, though you don't have to buy a lab manual. We don't discuss the textbook in class and the tests are based on lab and ppt lecture notes. It's not a hard class but he doesn't make it that interesting. I'd like to see more hand-on lab work.

My memories of this class are ones of nightmares. Totally switched up his teaching style during my year. Told us so himself. Talks too fast, doesn't clear up hard subjects, won't give up much if any help. Withdrew after the first test, the classes (2 sections) average was a 61%. That should tell you something. I agree he's also arrogant.

good guy, but he treated our class like we were geoscience majors. lectures were unclear and didnt match the exams. for being a 100-level course, it was difficult.

Something is not right when he takes his own exam and scores 86 or below. Also told the class he would curve the first exam since the mean was 60, but decided to make the curve over the whole test average, rather than that exam alone. Basically, students who were to withdraw thought they'd be fine and now failed. I got a B, but I'm sorry for them.

Bad professor. It tells you something when 90% of the people fail the exams. This is a 100 level class. We are not Geoscience majors. Unreasonable man. Told us we didnt know how to take notes right. It is hard to take notes when you talk a mile a minute. Learn how to teach. Thank god he is leaving. grow your beard back.

Talks TOO fast! Unfair for various reasons. If you forget your clicker you dont get the attendance points even if you were in class. BUT he forgot his computer numerous times. Next, talked more about his daughter and his trips more than anyone cared. Tests are extremely difficult. The highest grade in our class was an 87% out of 100 people. SUCKS

Most unreasonable professor ever! DO NOT TAKE HOVAN! My friend past away, so my absences were excused, yet he would not accept them. I was within .4% of a B at the end of semester b/c I was missing class points, and he wouldn't do anything about it. He even said that the class points I missed wouldn't affect my grade. Complete liar! RUN!

This guy is awful about grading. Tests are ridiculous for a 103 introductory class. DO NOT TAKE HIM! Teaches way too fast and does not care about helping you.
