She gives out weekly quizzes and is very thorough on her feedback for exams. Super nice but just not a very interesting class if poetry isn't your thing. A LOT OF READING. requires a lot of work outside the classroom. exams are kinda hard if you don't read& she'll know. she is very specific about the answers she wants.

Great professor and great class. Wide variety of material, almost all of which was interesting. Not a class worth taking if you don't participate. Papers were thoroughly read/analyzed/graded so crucial that you apply effort. Relatively frequent online discussion posts which are not difficult.

Vanderborg is quite the character to say the least. However, she is a very sweet lady that cares about her students. She is always willing to help on the papers she assigns & gives lots of feedback. But, she is a tough grader though and expects you write how she wants the essays written. Class sessions are easy just do the reading & participate.

Vanderborg is an interesting character who tries to keep the class engaged during her lectures with open class participation. Only two papers but they are graded toughly and fairly long, but she gives pages (literally) of feedback so that helps a ton. Final was very long and all written, but not difficult material. Recommend but be ready to work.

Comment:
Dr. Vanderborg is such a sweet person, but her teaching was strange. I hated almost everything we read because it was so obscure and didn't really relate to American literature. She says attendance isn't mandatory, but if you have a good excuse you won't have a problem.

One of the best professors you could ask for. Not a class where you can expect an easy A. A good bit of hard work, but she always makes the material enjoyable. Her feedback is also really thorough. She is one of the most spirited professors on campus, unlike some who you can tell wish they weren't there. An overall great person and professor.

Asks questions every class but hardly anyone answers(which means lots of quiet time). She gives the questions to the quizzes beforehand,so be sure to actually study for those. Just a very boring class,I always feel the want to fall asleep. Easy tests if you actually write a lot & just explain it is really easy to get an A. Grade based on test/quiz

Dr. Vanderborg is kinda quirky but it's funny and endearing. She cares about her students and encourages participation. As long as you show up to class and seem to be interested and trying to do well, she will help you be successful. She was willing to look over every essay before the due date and gave thoughtful constructive criticism.

Professor Vanderborg is so sweet! She is very passionate about this class. I had to take for Honors english credit, and the material we read was pretty unique. Only 1 major paper, another smaller one with a collage project. I would definitely take her again!

A strange human. Sweet lady and interesting reading selections. However, wish she would speak to the class like adults and not preschoolers. (But the pep talks of "wow great" "awesome" "amazing analysis" "wonderful" "oooooo, this is so exciting" make you feel better when you know you're trash)

Such a gem of a human being, a genius at best. She puts a lot of effort into providing feedback on quizzes and essays alike. Plus, her bubbly personality will keep you awake in class. However, is a cryptic grader when it comes to interpretating literature and you must apply her framework of thinking to get good grades.

Professor Vanderborg is so passionate about Cyborg literature, her classes are like discussions not lectures, I love them! You'll pass if you show up, participate in discussions, and make sure to always do the readings so you pass the quiz she gives weekly on whatever reading you've been assigned. It's interesting, I would recommend this class.

Dr. Vanderborg is my favorite professor so far. She is beyond passionate about the material and while that may be off-putting at first, I began to enjoy it. The tests are straightforward and not difficult if you take good notes during class. I would definitely recommend her, but only if you have some interest in the subject matter.

Terrible. Vanderborg is probably the strangest professor I've had at USC. She's really passionate about the material, a strong feminist, and overall just pretty annoying. She gives pop quizzes that are based off of her definition or interpretation of literature, and she's not really open to any conflicting opinions. Definitely would try to avoid

You have to read and pay attention in class. She is the definition of passionate and will try her best to keep you interested in a course you wish you didn't have to take. Try to get as much as you can out of this course because she is a brilliant person. Would definitely take again.

This was one of the most confusing classes i have had in college so far. multiple pop quizzes. Every novel was very confusing and you had to take serious note during reading in order to understand. If you ask questions typically her response will only confuse you more. Passionate about literature and her class. but be prepared to be confused.

Dr. Vanderborg is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Her lectures are extremely boring though. Short 5-6 question pop quiz on the course materials once a week and a few larger assignments throughout the semester. The easiness of the class is dependent upon how easy your TA grades. If you are decent at English this will be an easy class.

She is SO passionate about english and if you aren't interested, it's just all really really annoying. Lectures are unbelievably boring. There are weekly quizzes and if you're even 5 minutes late to class, you miss them. I would take the class with someone else.

She is very passionate about English, but lectures are boring if you're not interested. The midterm and final consist of analyzing passages read in the class and there's one major paper
