Comment:
Tomas is a great guy. That being said, what a horrid teacher. He contradicted himself about journalism like every class period. Lectures were painstaking and consisted of Tomas just repeating what the assigned reading said. He gives out pop quizzes and hardly ever gives you enough time to finish them. Took every chance to have us read his work lol.

The class is mostly graded on effort, but you don't know your standing until week 9. His instructions and grading methods are rarely unclear. Just show up, keep a detailed journal, and you'll pass.

Tomas makes you work, he pushes you, but in the end he's the reason you will get a job. He is especially helpful one-on-one. If you don't like something, talk to him about it! He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed after college. Tomas was my favorite professor while at SU. Anyone who can't handle him is just plain lazy.

Comment:
Guillen is both my advisor and professor. He is inadequate in both realms. He has never given helpful advice, teaches in an archaic fashion, and is incredibly narcissistic. Even after my grandmother's death, he refused to give me a one day extension because it would be "unfair." You know what's unfair? Crippling depression and subsequent anxiety.

Great class, Tomas is very helpful and will stay after class to explain anything you didn't understand. I learned everything and more about Journalism, it reassured me why I chose this major and pushed me to continue to pursue it. I highly recommend this class!

All you hear is him talking about himself. Dont ever get on his bad side. Definitly plays favorites. No matter the situation (family emergency/ physical illness ect) he isnt understanding at all if you need to miss class. Also, his assingments are vauge and he expects way too much from you & makes you feel like crap if you couldnt do it all.

I also disagree with the negative comments about Professor Guillen. I'm a Comm. major (sr), and this is my first journalism class--it's great! Few assignments, most of which are in class. Very helpful, loves meeting with students. The class is straightforward, fun, and not unreasonably difficult. My only beef? The pop quizzes on the Seattle Times!

Comment:
Tomas Guillen is the definition of pompous. You will spend the majority of your time in his classes listening to him talk about how great he thinks he is, and very little time actually learning. His feedback is rude, unhelpful and he definitely chooses favorites. Avoid ANY class he offers at all costs.

He is without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. He is ****, homophobic, mean, and an incredibly hard grader. If he doesn't like what you say he'll mark you down. His expectations are always unclear and his grammar rarley correct. Avoid him at all costs.

He picks and chooses who he likes. If he likes you, you'll do well. If he doesn't, he's on your case and rude.

Thinks he is a the cat's meow (and then some!) leading you to believe if you stick with what he says, he will find you a key internship. Impossible to get a hold of. Even more impossible to get an answer. Don't understand why he bothers to be a teacher if he doesn't want to mentor. The program is small enough, gotta go through him for EVERYTHING!

I disagree w/most of these ratings. He is my advisor and I dont feel that he is unhelpful or tries to drive me from the major. I also dont feel as if I am one of his favorites. If people feel as though he is driving them away than maybe they dont have the drive or desire to be in the field as it is extremely competitive and cut throat.

I LOVED this class. professor guillen was so helpful, he was sometimes vague about assignments, but if you asked he was always willing to clarify and give extra help! all journalism majors should take his classes

Good teacher but not at all clear about what he expects of his students. You constantly need to ask him to reiterate. But there is no escaping Guillen if you are a journalism major so get used to it!

well, this is an investigative journalism class, so it can be very, very challenging (especially if you have a job, because there are a lot of leg work). He can be unclear of what he wants. But I find that if you work hard in this class, you can get a lot. But I do feel that he has favorites in the class, and that can be discouraging.

I'm biased because I'm about 99.99 percent sure Tomas hates my guts, but he is one of the few actual journalists teaching at SU so I have to give him that. If you can stand his personality (I couldn't) you'll do fine. But, man, we do NOT like each other.
