Dr. Barney teaches a very bare-bones class. He has no lecture materials, only himself. He's very helpful outside of class but it is important to keep up with him or else you will fall behind quickly.

I took Barney's class to fulfill Gen Eds. The lectures are extremely long and boring. On some Tuesdays he would give pop quizzes or "In-Class Assignments," which were relatively easy. However, he grades extremely tough on essays and exams. The final exam was worth 40% of the overall grade. He also NEVER gives grades back.

I took this class to fulfill gen eds. I love American history and was very excited to take this course. I loved the material we covered, but would highly recommend that you take this course with the other professor who offers it. Barney is an EXTREMELY hard grader, the hardest I have had yet at UNC.

The class was pretty easy until the final, where whatever I made brought it down from an A- to a B. I don't know what I made because doesn't post any grades nor the syllabus online. However knowledgeable he may seem, he buys into random stuff like 9/11 being an inside job(he told us jet fuel can't melt steel beams).

Dr. Barney obviously knows his stuff, but the lectures are really dense. The class is basically just him lecturing with occasional pop quizzes, two tests, and a few papers. I worked really hard on all the assignments and got a solid B. I don't know many people who got A's. I took this thinking it would be fun...

Pr. Barney is probably the most inspirational, smart, and wisest professors on the eastern seaboard. He's incredibly knowledgeable about the Civil War. Make time to visit him in office hours, he loves to give advice and ask questions. Make the effort to know him; you'll l be greeted with stories, laughs, and inspiration. This teacher is the GOAT.

Professor Barney is the most boring professor ever. Lectures aren't mandatory and you might as well not go because all the information is in the online textbook. You have three short papers that he grades ridiculously hard. The midterm and final are easy to pass because he gives comprehensive study guides. The class was the dread of my week.

Professor Barney is one of the most knowledgeable professors at UNC. He knows his Civil War history up and down, and he's excited to share his knowledge with his students. He's a tough grader though, make sure to put lots of thought and effort into assignments.

The class is basically graded off of a few papers, midterm and final. Study and prepare for each thing, and you might get out with an A. I took the class for the credit, but he relies on a your genuine interest of history during the lectures. Therefore, I was very bored.

Professor Barney was great. He knows his stuff backwards and forwards. I didn't attend class very often, but I kept up with the readings and I did fairly well. He has you write 3 short papers throughout the semester which he grades pretty strictly. The midterm is detail-oriented; the more specific, the better.

Absolutely wonderful professor. Expert in his field. I took it over the summer, so no TA's. Midterm was 40%, final was 60%. Very strict grader. For the text, read HIS books (that he wrote)..... you'll learn much more than the assigned readings.

I had Professor Barney for a Civil War course at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey)in 1975. Almost 40 years and 3 master degrees later, Professor Barney still ranks as one of my best professors ever. (And I am happy to report that my youngest daughter will be a freshman this year at Gettysburg College! What irony!!).

He knows the Civil War inside and out, which I thought would be good, but the entire class was just horrendously boring blow-by-blow details of every single battle, troop movement, shot fired, etc. Definitely taught as a PWAD and not a HIST class. Also does not touch on Reconstruction at all, so no clue why that's in the course title.

Fantastic Professor. I enjoyed his lectures, and I actually thought that he was very entertaining. The two midterms are graded by TA's, so if you have a good one like I did, it is possible to succeed. However, the final is graded by Barney, and he is a Stickler. You are given the material for the test prior to the test, so STUDY IT ALL!

Dr. Barney rocks! He knows everything about American history and includes really insteresting details in his lectures. Two of the three tests are graded by TAs, so prepare for the final really well because he grades very harshly. This is the most interesting class I've taken at Carolina!

Engaging speaking who loves what he teaches. Mid-term and Final only -- but very difficult if you are not prepared, and it is critical that you do well on the exams as there is nothing else to off-set your grade. Makes himself available if you have questions or need help. Great class!

An interesting and engaging lecturer. You can really tell he loves what he's teaching and he passes it on to his students. The tests are hard, but if you study enough and pay attention in recitations you'll do well. NOT impossible to get an A.
