He's a great, motivated professor, but you've got to WORK for that A! He is passionate about his field as well as educating his students and it shows in his lectures. He knows it's a hard class and is happy to help you after class. The book is helpful for understanding the material, but the powerpoints have the bulk of the information on the tests

Proteins is a death sentence for biochem majors. Get ready to read and pay attention to the stuff he says in class. Will get off tangents and rant during lecture. His homework grading is really weird, like you might do it correctly, but get half of the credit. He is a good researcher, however, lecturing is not his best.

Dr. Widger is a great teacher. Sometimes he can go off on tangents, but they are usually interesting. His tests are difficult, and sometimes he will put things on the test that are only mentioned in lecture. However, his grading scale is subjective to the student, and he has lots of grace for late work. His office hours are very helpful.

This is the next Nobel laureate at UH. Incredibly knowledgeable professor who knows pretty much anything on a given topic (whether its biochem, cell bio, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, geology, etc.) I was extremely impressed by his attitude and enthusiasm. As a Sr biochem student, you should bring personal tenacity and curiosity to class.

Stay away. This class is required for BCHS majors and he seems to get pleasure out of torturing them. The class is rote memorization and his tests are tricky. There is a lot of information to know. Go to the classes for the face recognition, but know that you probably won't get anything from his teaching that isn't on the slides. Overall, mediocre.

Proteins is fairly work intensive: 10 HW, 1 Term Project, and 3 Exams (Non-cummulative). Put effort into the homework and term project as they are meant to pull up your grade (20% each). Dr. Widger is very enthusiastic about teaching; show him that you are putting effort into learning the material and it can go along way. Good curve where >80 is A-

If you're in Biochem you have to take him for proteins. Study a lot for his tests, his tests are easy and evil at the same time, be perceptive, start on homework way ahead of time, you'll do fine. There's usually a good curve.

my favorite professor ever! His lectures are interesting, though it's difficult to keep up sometimes. you have to take notes in class. He is nice and helps you as much as possible. Hard subject but getting A is not difficult! although midterm and final were take home, you can NOT complete in one night.I got 100 on both!

Dr. Widger is a great guy and a genius. But, he has a weird way of grading in his class and doesn't really give below C. My class had take home exams which sucked since two people who have nearly identical answers will not get same grade (like a 75/B and a 98/A). He has a very lenient grade scale but he has an odd way in which he grades. He seems to have his predetermined favorites and that is how he grades. I did get a B in the class but it was definitely an A w unbiased teacher.

Dr. Widger is a great professor. The material is pretty difficult, and sometimes he talks over my head, but overall I love his classes. If you do the homework, and attend class (he tends to recognize people that always go), and study super hard you'll do fine. I did horrible on the tests, (C's and D's) and I ended up getting a B in the class.

Nice old guy, kinda goofy personality, but serious nonetheless. Proteins was a somewhat interesting class, and Widger was enthusiastic about it. Couple HWs, 3 tests, a term project, and learning about visualizing proteins on the PC... pretty good curriculum.

mr widger- he reads off the slides, the textbook sucks to me, chapters are short- which means not enough information. i thought the exam wasnt hard but somehow everyone did bad. and he acts like he cares by telling us to study harder- while he keeps a wide smile on his face laughing at us. he may be smart but he cant teach. doesnt reply to emails.

Dr. Widger is more of an upper undergrad/graduate professor. I can see why freshman bio students gave him a bad review, but he is not bad and is very fair with the grading scale.

He is a nice guy, but talk a lot and most of them are not related to your tests. Still, there are some information that is in test and cannot be found in textbooks or slides but his lectures. Read book, you will find it helpful.

First off, contrary to the previous post, he is not dead. His tests are quite difficult but if you know how to study, you'll pull off an easy A. He gives a lot of extra credit. Don't bother reading the book, just memorize everything in the notes.

just read the book because the lectures were no help. The second teacher was worse because he barely spoke English.
