Comment:

Alan expects a lot from his students and runs his class in a very lecture heavy style. He gives out so many readings so dont fall behind on those and dont forget to do your reading responses as they are worth more than youd think. Be ready for a tough grader but fair grader nonetheless. Hes a better person than profesor, but is alright overall.

I love Alan as a person, but as a professor, I didn't find him super compelling. Lots of reading (obviously) but he tends to wax poetic about this super whitewashed and idealized idea of the Voyageurs and the fur trade era in particular. That's honestly what I remember from this class the most!

Excellent teacher. Easy grader. Lots of class discussion. Very helpful, but class feels like a 100 level course.

Alan is extremely helpful and good with bringing class discussions about in different lights. His papers aren't too bad to write and he's usually an easy grader. Class participation is a big thing in his classes but he can make it a lot of fun.
