It is a reading class but you will feel like it is a writing class, you have 10 quizzes and 4 papers and one last final anthology project. The quizzes are not hard if you read the assignment. But papers are hard in sense that he always tries to find something. Even if you do your paper best he will find something and give you low score.

Your opinion does not matter in this class. No matter your argument or evidence, if he doesn't agree with you, you are wrong. On multiple occasions, he would make the class read a students paper and give it a grade. If he thinks you deserve an F or have the wrong opinion, get ready for the whole class to know.

I enjoyed Alex. The reading was pretty easy. If you don't do it every once and awhile, you'll be ok. He gave enough time to do well on papers. Lots of quizzes though. But a lot of extra credit to even it out. Our class was also able to convince him to let us use notes or work in groups for the quizzes multiple times.

He pushed his opinion on students. I never interpreted any literature on my own, rather, I had to write/say what he wanted to hear. He was a very passionate instructor, which I appreciated; however, I felt he belittled my opinions. He does give extra credit and hard pop quizzes. You need to do well on the papers.

Professor J was alright, he talks a lot and does not allow for much class participation. Sometimes his views would impact his interpretation too much and he would push his views on students. He never learned students names so it was hard to feel valued. Overall you get the grade you deserve in the class because he offers extra credit.

Professor Alex was an amazing prof. The class had 5 papers and a final reflection that was the final exam. He is a tough grader but is very clear about what he is looking for and gives amazing feedback. Go to his office hours and he will make writing so much easier for you. There is some reading but you could get away without doing most of it. TAKE

Professor J is really lenient. He assigns readings from the book and we discuss them in class which can be interesting and boring at times. He offers extra credit and lets you redo certain assignments so take advantage of those extra points. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS FOR PAPERS and you will get A. He always works in the student's favor TAKE HIM!

Assigned a textbook but found the stories for you online which was really helpful and meant you didn't need the textbook. Great in class discussions. I was actually happy to go to class. He made you become interested in the text and he really valued your opinion. Great teacher, would definitely take again.

Pretty cool guy and passionate about his subject. Every day we were assigned a few short stories or poems to read, then we discussed them for the entire class. Very easy and interesting at times. I read all the assigned pieces in the beginning, then started using Sparknotes when I was pressed for time and I was totally fine. Would recommend.

Jochaniewicz is a decent option for UCLR. It's a lot of reading initially, and during class all you do is discuss the texts. At the beginning of the semester he gives a lot of pop quizzes to make sure students keep up with the readings. There are only 4 papers a semester and the midterm&final are open book/open note. Class is really boring, though.

The stories and poems are interesting and he goes over everything in extreme detail. However, he spends most classes just talking the whole time. There are quizzes that he will just add in randomly, but sometimes he gives the class the option to take one or not. He grades pretty tough on the essays, but gives you a lot of feedback.

Prof. J is a great 100 level teacher. You read the assigned texts and come to class and discuss it the entire time. Can be boring at times if you aren't into literature. Gives pop quizzes sometimes, but are usually 5-10 point 1-2 question quizzes. Can be talked out of giving pop quizzes (once instead of a pop quiz he gave everyone extra credit)

Really nice guy. Super easy to talk to. He's interested in hearing how the students react to things. He has a few pop quizzes early in the semester to kind of scare you into reading but the literature he has you read is decent stuff that I'd recommend reading anyway. There are a few papers too but they're short in length and he'll outline each

He is MEH in the finest sense of the word. He himself does not really analyze literature that well, but addtionially it's just a dull topic but you'll get an A.

Alex is an amazing teacher. He is very interested in literature and wants you to learn how to be a well read person who can understand all forms of literature from all backgrounds. There are two major tests, the midterm and final, that are open book and notes. That means take good notes and organize them for the tests and you will do well.

Alex is a great professor. He came off a little pretentious at first but he really knows what he's talking about. He had some really great in class discussions that helped people improve their writing, and edits your rough draft before you submit your final. Is also very open to the class' ideas on how grading should work.
