If you are deciding between this micro and the other micro class, please dear god take the other one. Nothing will help you make a good grade in this class. Avoid this professor!!! I didn't trust her rating and now I am suffering.

All Im gonna say is that ... I have never wanted to dropkick an 80 year old woman more that I have now. DO NOT take this class, or ANY class with this lady. Shes rude, doesn't help, a horrible lecturer, makes snarky comments to students and her tests/quizzes are difficult. You can study day in and day out and still look at your exam and be clueless

Jesus Christ. I have always excelled in STEM classes but this aint no joke. She is extremely snappy and often rude. The class is quite lecture heavy, and there are discussion groups that meet every week. Exams extremely difficult and no answers to practice exams posted. You know it is bad when she considers all grades 83% and above to be an A......

Dr. Matthysse is a brilliant researcher, but a horrible lecturer and professor. Her lectures have no structure and run on tangents often. She was rude to both students and other faculty many times. The final contained content that wasnt covered in class on any level. She played favorites. Dont take her class. Just dont.

Avoid her like the plague. Majority of lectures were her talking at us on useless tangents. When she actually taught, it was disorganized and confusing. Forced us to pay for a textbook we did not use. Grading is subjective and she plays favorites. On occasion, she has been rude to both the fellow English professor and to students.

Class is fairly easy, mostly based in history than in microbiology. Really difficult to assess what she wants from you, often very broad and unspecified questions with a very specific desired response. Several classes of students learning for themselves with very loose goals and little instruction in mind. Played favorites and singled out students.

Worst professor I have ever had at UNC. Save yourself the trouble. Tests are composed of only short answer questions with no multiple choice. The textbook and mastering was completely useless. Her powerpoint lectures are mainly figures and most are not from the textbook, so you aren't able to reference them later.

Lectures are ineffective and the tests are long and impossible to prep for. Your only hope is to study previous exams but there's no answer keys so you're completely in the dark. She's not great at explaining concepts and acts like she's bothered when you ask her a question. Class is way more frustration than it's worth.

The worst educator/person I have ever met in my entire life. Extremely derogatory and just disrespectful to any student she is talking to. The class was unnecessarily difficult which is a shame because I was really interested in the material. To study for exams you studied previous exams and none of the material taught in class or in the textbook.

Dr. Matthysse is the coolest human being ever. She is a literal genius and inspired me to go into the field of microbiology. The class is definitely the hardest I have taken at UNC, but you really learn how to critically think in the field of biology. There is no point in reading the textbook, just do all of the previous exams she releases.

Dr. Matthysse is not a good teacher. Her lectures are rambling and go off on random tangents that she tests you on. She flips the switch from sweet old lady to insane and evil in a heartbeat. Tests are really hard and its pretty difficult to study for them. Overall would not recommend taking this class. Look at Mcro 251 instead!!

Worst professor I have ever had at Carolina. Every day our lecture consisted of her making general statements that did not match up with the power points. Almost every test you take you will have to resubmit for a regrade because of how many mistakes that are made. I can say that this class has been more stress than it's worth and she needs to go.

go to class, write down everything she says, even if it doesn't sound important (because oftentimes it is). do the practice exams and study in a group. don't approach her outside of office hours without an appt. do all that and you will be fine.

Worst teacher I've ever had. She is condescending, extremely difficult to approach, and definitely not the easiest person to look at. The perpetual sneer on her face was a testament to how she didn't want you to succeed. Oh, the book was of no use either.

This class is a nightmare. Dr. M laughs at her own jokes, runs into her own desk so much, she bruises herself. The class is such a waste! All you do is memorize old test, if you actually read the material you are screwed!I would not recommmend it to my worst enemy!

Horrible teacher. You will learn very little and be engaged even less. All you do is memorize old tests because knowing the material from the book won't help you at all. She even tells you that if you do the reading you will make a C- on her tests. Condescending, pretentious and not at all helpful. Read a book on your own. You'd be better off

If you're a seasoned microbiologist,you'll do fine. ^.> Expects entirely too much on tests.Studying won't help much. Class was at 8,had to come in at 730 to be able to finish exams(90% of people were still there at 845). Grades harshly.Ran overtime often.Memorize old tests;if you want to learn, avoid. Gave us 2 min to do evaluations, of course.

Comment:

Matthysee is a sweet woman, but the class is very hard, the tests are very hard (all tests are cumulative with difficult tricky questions), unlimited studying may not help you. Hard to follow but if you need the class only she teaches it.
