Professor Gerl makes learning German extremely unpleasant. No time spent on practicing speaking, all about memorization. But, the worst part is her rude and at times disrespectful behavior towards students who have a hard time learning. I had to drop. Do NOT take her if you don't want to be humiliated in front of the whole class.

I took German 2 and 3 with Frau Gerl. She is a challenging professor who can really improve your proficiency in German if you are diligent and organized. There is no doubt that she cares about her subject and you should too. Consistent attendance and doing the assignments are non-negotiable. Students who join and assist the German Club are favored.

To my memory, I have taken 3 courses with Professor Gerl. Two were at UCLA Extension, where I took my very first German class and then at SMCC. I always was excited to take her courses because she's a native speaker and knows how to teach. If you want to learn German, you will do it with Professor Gerl but you'll have to put in the effort.

Really hard to like this professor. Too much yelling and condescending. Not a good way of keeping students interested in German. I took her classes because I like learning languages and like to read literature in the original. She made me dread going to her class every single time. Her teaching is dry as a stick. Unfriendly, and sarcastic.

Professor Gerl is critical, loud, and irritating. Often rude. We can't really tell her what we think of her. Her methodes are ancient, and you'll be better learning on your own.

Professor Gerl really needs to enter the 21st century. I was taking French as well learning to speak and write in French and in Gerl's class just rote memorization of grammar. The difference was mind-boggeling. Not to mention the fact that she is very unfriendly and at times rude.

I took German 1 and 2 with Professor Gerl, and now I am taking German 3 with her and thinking of maybe dropping. Professor Gerl is very old school and has sometimes a bad temper. I barely ever missed class, and always did the homework and walked away with a B. It is really her personality that is bothersome.

Very disappointing and frustrating class. Professor Gerl means probably well but doesn't really know how to teach in a way not to offend some students. You need to attend class and do homework, but you need the help of lab's tutors.

Beware if you are offended easilysensitive. She's an old timer and is not prepared in changing her ideas or ways. Overall, the lectures are very interactive and I learned a lot. It's a 5-unit class so it does require a substantial amount of studying. Tests are moderately difficult and they're modeled after the homework and worksheets.

This was a hard and often stressfull class. German doesn't come easy to me and professor Gerl's yelling didn't make it any easier. When you don't have the right answer you just get yelled at. Overall you can pass if you come to class and memorize grammar.

Professor Gerl is not as bad as many students thought she was. The problem with her is really her personality. She is just too loud, irritating and sometimes comes across as mean. If you can get pass that, it's not that bad.

AUSGEZEICHNET! Had Dr. Gerl for Elementary German 1 as a summer course and could not have been happier with the instruction. She is clear and concise, but has a great wit that makes something complicated actually fun! She loves German and if you study and are dedicated you're bound to get an A in the class. Highly recommended!

One of the most dedicated professors I ever had. Contrary to other comments about her personality. We can't judge her base on her attitude in class. I was fortunate to take her classes and got to know Prof. Gerl outside of class instruction. Very caring, sweet and easily approachable.

I can't wait for this class to end. 10 weeks of grammar memorization, insults and stress. I actually like German, but Professor Gerl's teaching has made learning German a living hell. She has no patience and puts you on the spot and if you don't get it right, she'll make fun of you. I don't even want to go to class any more.
