Not a Classics major, got an A+. I loved this class. Yeah, he goes on tangents and class can be boring sometimes, but he knows a LOT and is always willing to answer questions, office hours, etc. Read a fair amount of the books. Focus on PLACES in Greece & the festivals associated with them, and focus on the specific types of rituals .

My advice is to ignore the previous, negative comments. A couple of kids must've just really disliked him for some reason. He's amazingly knowledgeable a/b Ancient Greece. His lectures run a little slow, but he is very passionate a/b the subject matter & has a great dry wit. He's rather old so he has a grandfatherly presence. Class was so easy too!

Bulloch is NOT like a grandfather telling stories. He spent 10+ lectures on the Odyssey, although we had moved on to other readings. This was torture. You would walk into lecture and think, "Maybe, maybe it'll be over." It wasn't. The day he gave the last Odyssey lecture, we clapped, not because the lecture was good, but because we were free.

So this class in my opinion was SO boring. you really dont need to go to class. just learn everything from the textbook. He spent basically the 1st half the semester talking about the Odyssey, and picked some gods/greek characters that I thought he only personally liked. Midterm was easy, and final was fair. Had a great GSI, thank goodness.

This class got me started in classics. Its like a 2 hr story time by a grandpa. He gives meaning and depth to everything that's studied in the class. However, he explains everything much further than can be inferred by a student, so reading/attendance to lecture is key. However, if you take good notes, the exams are easy and its a pretty easy A

I found the lectures interesting despite very lackluster attendance, and made sure I read the textbook entirely before the final, which if you do better on than the midterm makes the midterm grade void, so as to be decently prepared. Section was a little boring, but the GSI was enthusiastic and section did have a bearing on the grade. Not too hard.

Fascinating. You can tell he knows the material heart and soul, and he will completely change the way you look at mythology. His class got me continuing in the study of mythology.

Buloch is clearly very knowledgeable about Greek myth, but he's qualified to the point that his lectures usually turn into ramblings as he goes on tangent after tangent, linking all kinds of ideas together. Great if you're enamored with Greek myth, but I rarely show up to class since it's a miracle if he talks about the current course material.

Nice guy, but hardly 5 minutes worth of information in a 90 minute lecture. Not teaching at an upper division level. If I am enrolled in a class I want to learn something not get the same grade if I skip the classes.

You have to make the effort to go for consultation and you'll find he's really helpful. this guy really knows his stuff. he seems of tangent only because he knows so much that he links everything together. that is he wants to see on the exam as well.link everything to the bigger picture.one of the best teachers ever!

Horrible class. Readings were enjoyable but does not explain what he expects of students on exam so hard to get a good grade. Lectures are sometimes interesting but most of the time useless because he goes on tangents. Boring class.

Took him for both 28 and 121. Absolutely loved him. Really cares about his students. Very enjoyable lectures. He is quite the comedian. Easy to talk to and very helpful!! If you don't take him you would really be missing out. One paper, two tests. Class not too hard. He made me fall in love with Classics. Wish I could take more classes from him!

Bulloch is very much a grandfatherly figure who gives the impression he truly cares about his students. While, with most professors, you're lucky if you learn anything while listening to them speak, with Bulloch, you not only learn, but you'll find it enjoyable.

Going to class was like going to story-time in the afternoon and learning about heroic myths from a grandfatherly figure. Sometimes rambled on but still very interesting esp w/ British accent

Lectures are basically him summarizing what you should have read. In section you discuss what you should have read. 1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 final. All very easy work. Final can replace midterm grade if it's higher, will be averaged if it's lower. Very easy class and interesting if Greek myth is your thing.

Lecture was great mostly because I didn't go. Taking the midterm can only help you (a higher grade on the final will remove the midterm, while a higher midterm grade will be averaged with the final). On my essay, my GSI wrote that the main problem was that my paper didn't deal with Greek myth. I still pulled an A in the class. Clearly I'm a genius.

Easy class, boring professor. Your midterm doesnt even count if you do better on the final. Section is a big part of your grade. Some GSI's make a quiz and a response due every week and others have you do absolutely nothing but discuss the plays, which were all really good. There's only one big paper to write and you can pick your own topic.

I really like this class, because there are a lot of Greek plays involved and they're very interesting. The class can be boring sometimes, but he plays video tape half of the time. Attendance is kind of important because what he says is important for the midterm and final. Sections are helpful of clarifying the content of the plays. Easy class.

Bulloch is a nice professor, a bit boring, but if you're seriously interested in the material, then lectures will be great. Otherwise, its just an easy class overall - your whole grade depends on your GSI, and studying for the exams pretty much comes from discussions solely, so lecture isn't mandatory whatsoever. Great class for engineers.
