Extraordinarily interesting and mind expanding class. He's one of the best profs I've had at Cornell and he really enjoys his job. And he's definitely hot in one of those free thinker revolutionary kind of ways.

Recalling Neruda's assertion regarding those who fail to read Cortazar, those who do not take a course with Barry suffer from "a serious invisible disease which in time can have terrible consequences. Something similar to a man who has never tasted peaches. He would quietly become sadder...and, probably, little by little, he would lose his hair."

He is an amazing guy and has a great teaching approach. Very much discussion based, but he really makes you think and become very interested in the subject. Be prepared to talk in class, but most likely you'll want to. I'm taking another class with him next semester. Only two papers required. no tests.

Interesting man, kind of a paradox. Very committed to his students, but never returns ANYTHING. Alternative teaching style, discussion-based but highly disorganized and often frustrating. You pretty much either love him or hate him. I hated him but I realized his merit and I learned a lot from his class. Not sure if I would take it again, though.

Policing and Prisons is an interesting class, but Maxwell ruins it with his lack of structure, organization, and overall knowledge of the subject. Although he is very passionate about the subject, he does not have a clue how to teach. You don't need to do any of the readings, or even show up to lecture.

A tough, demanding teacher that will expand your mind and make you think like a good drug. Great 1-on-1 and at leading a class. committed to undergrads, treats you like an equal though he is very intelligent + accomplished. Highly recommended.
