Lab is basically following instructions. He comes for the first 10-15 minutes then we do our thing. Chill about most things and is pretty nice from the few times I talked to him. Lab isn't difficult at all, just tedious.

Comment:
Barry only spends the first 10-15 minutes of lab with students to briefly explain the experiment, then leaves the TAs to run the lab. However, this system works very smoothly and he's accessible outside of class. Very forgiving if you're willing to talk to him in person. Go to his office at least once to see dope pictures of him from the '80s.

you only see him for like 10 min at the start of gen chem lab. he comes in explains the lab of the week and the background material and then leaves. if you read the lab powerpoints, read the pre lab in the lab book, and start the post lab questions before you go into lab, you should do really well in lab which could help your overall gen chem grade

This guy is irrelevant to your grade. It's all about your TA. But if you want to know some things about this guy is that he doesn't take any BS. If a TA is talking over him while he is explaining the lab, he'll tell the TA off right in front of everyone. Straight savage. Has that Old New York Man Vibe to em. Labs are OK. Do pre lab b4 doe

THE WORST. Sure, he's nice but that doesn't make up for how terrible this class is. So disorganized. You can barely understand what he's trying to say at the beginning and then he's gone. My TA was so incompetent, he couldn't answer any questions and had me redoing experiments over and over. Yeah I got an A but at what cost. At what cost...

While Barry Rugg does a great job of operating the course, the general consensus is that it adds no real merit or value to a students learning experience. Students simply follow the course guidebook and leave at the end of class. ANYONE can succeed given they do the minimal work towards it (two hours prep a week). It's following instructions!

Nice guy, very helpful during office hours and such. Lecture is kind of irrelevant if you know how to read the manual. But I hear they are going to remove lab lecture anyways so he will probably just be around for lab. Have fun.

Don't bother going to lab lectures on Friday mornings. I never went and did fine on all the pre-labs. Besides, he puts all the powerpoints online. The buffer lab was the worst thing I've seen/done in my life. (You can afford to skip it if your other lab grades are high). He drops your lowest individual lab and quiz grades, including 0's.

Rugg is a really nice guy, and helpful if you ask for it. The TA's grade pretty fairly. Careful with sig figs, and be sure to show sample calculations. Final isn't too hard, just review the manual.

Although he goes over Pre-Labs in lecture, he does not do a terrific job of explaining them which leads to some confusion during the lab quizzes. Rushes through lab explanations during lecture but I think mainly because nobody really wants to be there on a Friday morning.

I love this guy! Lab is not hard at all (much easier than Halpin's class). Labs aren't bad, but graded by the TAs. You can get anything out of them just as long as your up their ass. Final is pretty much the same as quizzes, except it's 50 questions long opposed to 5. Rugg goes over prelabs in lecture, so it's helpful to go but not mandatory.

Don't go to lecture. Extremely helpful at office. Unfortunately, grade depends on how nice your TAs are. Got an A first semester, but a B+ second because of harsh TAs. Second semester quizzes are hard and the final is very vague and has many open-ended answers with no partial credit given. Don't go to the buffer lab. Overall, class is hit or miss.

don't go to lecture, you don't need to. he's stopped giving out prelab answers. actually, go the first day to see the hilarious safety video. TAs are either useless or super laid back - its all luck.

You only see professor Rugg at the beginning of lab and during lecture. At lecture he goes over the lab for the following week and gives advice/answers to the prelab. Just have one person go each week from your RCT and email everyone what happened. If you have some prior lab experience you shouldnt find this course that demanding or difficult.

Usually not necessary to go to lab lecture, but be careful - he changes things (he skipped a lab one week and anyone who didn't do the correct pre-lab wasn't allowed in the door). Best to switch off with a group of friends who do go to lab lecture to get the answers he gives out and note changes. Labs are straightforward - just don't skip them.

professor rugg is a great guy. the class is straight out of the lab manual. follow it, read it, do the work. his final is very fair. he gives you the answers to the pre-lab in his lectures. If u go to rugg's office hours, he's VERY VERY helpful...so use him to your advantage

Comment:
Prof. Rugg's content for his labs is really understandable and makes you reuse a lot of formulas which is useful for genchem, but the TAs, save a few, really need some work. I agree with those who said that the TA's need to know English! Prof. Rugg is very helpful if you go to his office hours and he's very fair about grading, even if the TA's rnt.
