He is a little long winded, but if I would take him as a professor any day over every other CS professor at OSU. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. Beware of the semester long group project. Start that A.S.A.P. Also, write down the slides on the cheat sheet allowed in the exams, they have every answer. Do not let yourself fall behind on the HW.

Dr. Mayfield is incredible slow teaching.... His lectures are boring and almost pointless. If you really want to learn anything interesting and actually for mobile apps development you should do extra assignments on your own as his assignments are way too easy.... (Some homeworks may take 10 minutes to finish)

I have had three of his classes and really enjoyed each of them. The classes are still challenging, but you learn a lot. And you can always schedule office hours if you feel like you are falling behind.

Took mobile applications and data structures with him. Lectures are good, clear, and detailed. Homework and programming assignments can be very challenging, but usually interesting. The group project in mobile apps can be very long, unclear, and difficult.

I had no previous experience with programming coming into this class. Some of the concepts may seem difficult, but the homework, labs, and programming assignments are still fairly simple. Also, if you get a 100% on all the homework, labs, and programs, and you can make a 60% average on the test, you will still come out with a B...

Overall good teacher. If you don't have prior programming experience, you're going to be miserable. Lectures are hard to stay awake through, but if you listen you will learn everything you need to know. Be prepared for several nerds to ask irrelevant questions throughout the lectures, it really wastes a lot of time.

If you have some prior programming experience (that is, if you have some foundation), you can make it through the whole class without opening the textbook. But, if you don't have that foundation, then be sure that you do plenty of exercises from the book - many of my peers have fallen into the trap of not practicing. Tests can be tricky otherwise.

This guy knows how to program, but if you didn't program as hobby in high school, I wouldn't suggest you take his course. He's pretty blunt about his comments towards students and can be a jerk if you don't meet up to his expectations.

Mayfield is not an easy teacher. He is a useful teacher. If you take his class seriously and learn what he teaches you will be very glad because it will prepare you for the rest of the major and REAL LIFE. If you think you can't take the workload (heavy) just wait a semester and take the next class. He really does care about his students though.

He knows that he knows his stuff. Questions must go first to clueless TAs before you ask him. He's either nice & helpful or a jerk. His specs for programs are in constant flux until the due date. His "non cumulative" exams cover stuff he doesnt cover & he refuses to tell you what to study beforehand. He reserves right to curve the class DOWNWARD.

Probably the best COMSC professor I had while there. This class prepared me more for "real" life in the industry than any other class in the major. 6 years out of my COMSC degree, and I still feel this way.

Good teacher and presented the material well. He has very little patience though. It seems he gets along very well with CS majors, but can be a bit of a jerk at times to others if you are having trouble understang his concepts or material.
