Dr. Swanson is an excellent professor. Yes, he assigns many books, but they are for your intellectual growth. Fair grader. . Stickler for grammar because he wants you to write like a student. Willing to help. He knows his stuff. One of the best teachers I have ever had.

Comment:

A very nice man and he is really passionate about his teaching. He lectures the whole entire time. Do not take his class if you are an visual learner because he is an audio teacher. If you don't want to write a 5-7 page about a book review, then don't take his class. He is there to help you if you need. Do read the textbook he assigns.

Very nice man. Lectures the whole time and you have to pay attention. Reading the book helps but I would not say absolutely necessary. Two book in depth reviews (read the book, he can tell if you just summarize the first few chapters)and two essay style tests with maps. He's a very helpful guy if you just ask and knows his subject quite well.

Class consists of tests and 2 major book reviews. Tons of notes and can be quite difficult to follow along. Like some of the earlier posts he does expect a lot from his students but he is extremely fair and a great teacher. Wish I did better in the class because he is a phenomenal teacher

Comment:

Hard grader, but fair. He expects a lot out of his students. Definitely not an easy a. You truly have to work for your grade in this class. Only a few grades for the semester so you can't screw up. He makes his class interesting. I would definitely recommend him to someone interested in taking this history class. Definitely knows his information.

Dr. Swanson knows a lot about history and that is clear when he teaches. He is willing to help you out and will review your book reviews if you give him time to do so. There are no notes on a Powerpoint. You have to take notes from his lectures. He is a very harsh grader. Do not take his couse if you want an easy A or B.

Dr. Swanson is a very interesting teacher, but he is very difficult. I would not say he encourages free thinking in his class, so keep your opinions to yourself. Take him if want to learn more about the subject you are seeking, but be warned, he is very tough.

Only grades he takes are two book reviews and the midterm and final. He is a very harsh grader as he focuses on grammar more than any of my english teachers ever have. He knows what he is talking about but if you are not a good writer and do not think in a broad manner I would not suggest this class.

I've had Swanson in the past and found him to be demanding, but fair. He simply wants his students to become scholars. Look at the spelling and grammar used by those who gave him low ratings. That speaks volumes! If you don't plan to learn, or work, I suggest that you save your parents' money and go get a job where education doesn't matter.

he really knows his stuff, but can be real annoying at times. harsh grader. If your not a history major i wouldnt take this class. way to hard for non-history majors. 2 book reviews and all test are essay.

I could tell professor Swanson knew what he was talking about. He had lots of interesting things to say and tried to get to know his students. I unfortunately needed to drop because other classes were so demanding I couldn't devote enough time to his. He did have some book reviews but the books did seem pretty interesting! I plan on retaking in SS!

Dr.Swanson is a good teacher. However, he makes you work extremely hard for your grade. He is passionate about what he is teaching and has no patience for thos who slack off. It's a hard course because their is alot of work but overall he is a pretty good teacher.

His knowledge of his material is unparalleled, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He'll make you work to succeed in his class, but he is passionate and genuinely interested in teaching you something. Those leaving negative comments are thin-skinned, lazy, or both. I hope I can someday be as good at my job as Dr. Swanson is at his.

You get out of his classes what you put into them. He's passionate about his subject, willing to help those who ask for it, and loves teaching. Giving him a low rating for NOT being easy is a compliment - it reflects the high quality of the graduate program in History at ECU!
